View Full Version : Using CVD resolution instead for lower bitrates?

Is it possible to use CVD (352x480 or 352x576) resolutions instead? I would only want to do this with lower bitrates to avoid macroblocks. I thought of altering the .avs files and use BiLinearResise to get the CVD res just before I encode with DoCCE4U. Would this still result in DVD legal files? I know that CVD is HalfD1 but would this approach work with the Big 3? Would scenarist accept the files and would the subtitles still work with a different resolution?
I always made SVCD & CVD for CD-R but I'm new to the DVD-R scene so any help would be appreciated!:D

Half-D1 is part of the official DVD-Standard. All Authoring-Programs have to accept Half-D1-Videos.
You can use all Features, except anamorphic encoding, that's only alowed on Broadcast D1 (704x480/576) and Full-D1 (720x480/576).
Some Authoring-Programs will accept anamorphic Half-D1, and most Players will play them correct, but it's out of Specs.

Thanks for that. Would I be right in assuming that I could therefore alter the .avs scripts and use Half-D1 as long as I add the black borders (if it's a 16:9 DVD) and encode as 4:3, non-anamorphic?

Yes, you can handle Half-D1 just like 704. But NOT like 720. For 720-Source you first have to crop the Video the correct way. I suggest you to use FitCD or Fit2Disc to do the correct Resizing. And you will get better results if you only resize in one direction.
And like i wrote: You can use anamorphic Encoding, most Players will accept that. But it's out of Specs, so there's no guarantee that all Players will play Videos like that correctly. If you are not sure about that, use letterboxed 4:3.

Thanks again. I've got for Fit2Disc for the resizing, so I'll give it a go. Cheers! :D

But if you use cvd resolution when you import the script that reauthorist create, scenarist give an error about the wrong width.
I changed the resolution in the script and then re-import in scenarist.
No errors and everything seems to work flawlessly.
There's another way (or more correct way) to use cvd resolution with big3 or i'm doin' right ?
Thanks

Can you describe exactly how you changed the scenarist script to accept the new resolution?

The script reauthorist create have lines like this
Item=Video
{
Place Holder=No
Comment=
Name=VTS03\VTS__03_P01.4~3_1
Resolution=PAL
Drop Type=Non-drop frame
Data Start Time=00:00:00;00
Data End Time=00:00:39;11
File=D:\Video_Girl_Ai_DVD1\VTS03\VTS__03_P01.4~3_1.MPV
Width=720
Height=576
Is Encoded=Yes
Encode Type=MPEG 2
Size=720 x 576
Aspect Ratio=4 : 3
Picture Structure=Frame Structure
GOP Size=15 frames
GOP Structure=N/A
Bit rate=9800000
Average Bitrate=6000000
Minimum Bitrate=4000000
Bitrate Type=Variable
Icon Time=00:00:00;00
Line21 Switch1=No
Line21 File1=
Line21 Switch2=No
Line21 File2=
Chapter Breaks=List
{
find the line where the name of the video file is the one you changed the resolution, change width and size from 720 to 352 then import the script in scenarist.
No more errors.
HTH bye
