can someone please give me a short overview of how multichannel-encoding actually is done?
i want to start experimenting with ac3->aac transcoding and i guess it would make sense to encode the different channels with different bitrates, right? is that perhaps done already in ac3? or would the encoder automatically drop near 0 if there were only quite ambient noises in the surround-channel for example? i know that mp3 can not really save bits under such conditions.

also i would be very thankfull if someone could shed some light on the questions i am investigation for hours now:

- is the nero-plugin the way to go and where can i get it? someone wrote that a newer version came out just recently but on the webiste (was nerodigital i think..) i couldn't find a thing to download..

- is there any known way of direct transcoding without producing huge intermediate files?
