Ok, as a favour to the Matroska guys for the great work I put together a 'Matroska Install Pack'. Well, Christian asked me too. Nice guy;)
Anyway, it contains the usual filters for most newcomers to get started with Matroska, namely:
Matroska v0.4.3 (both WinXP and Win9x)
CoreAAC v1.0b3
CoreVorbis v1.0b5
VSFilter v2.27
MatrixMixer ver 0.21a
Ac3filter 0.69b
Both Matroska & VSFilter will automatically detect your OS and install the right parser filter. Uninstall included.
Also has the option to do a custom install so those not needing Ac3filter for example can leave it unticked. Oh, and a wee icon too! I can supply the nsi script if you want.
Have fun.
Download v0.4.3 (http://members.boards.ie/the_edge/MatroskaPack%20v0.4.3.zip) (most recent)
Cheers.
PS
Not tested under Win98....should be ok though!
Edit 1 26/06/03:
Changed ChannelDownmixer for MatrixMixer (http://matrix-mixer.sourceforge.net/)
Update to CoreVorbis v1.0b5
Edit 2 13/07/03:
Update to VSFilter v2.27
Update to Ac3filter 0.69b

Use the mirror as it has a version number and will be easier to keep track of which one it is.
Also, if you already have one of these filters installed, you may want to reboot your computer to make sure that the file isn't locked, before you try to install this.
I was thinking you guys should do a NSIS installer for matroska. It would only take a minute for you guys to write, and it might be more friendly for your average user....
-Nic
I'm donwloading the package now and should have a "compact mf installer" ready within 30 minutes. Sit tight :D.

CoreVorbis v1.0b4
Will that conflict with OggDS?
Done! :)
The file is about 100KB larger, but for a bit more user-friendliness, that's ok, right? The exe can be opened with a ZIP archiver in case you need to install any of the files manually.
Get it here: http://nabeshin.ddo.jp/Matroska-0.4.3.exe

nope, not at all, we are using another MEDIATYPE, both filters can coexist without problems ...

Can you put into the installer the Matrix Mixer from the same author as AC3filter? (http://matrix-mixer.sourceforge.net/)
I think it would be better to have both programs out of "one hand"...
What do u think about it?
Besides... great work!

I don't think it's really necessary.
@Christian:
http://nic.dnsalias.com/Installer.zip
This contains a NSIS script (plus icons and license file)
So go install NSIS ( http://www.nullsoft.com/free/nsis/ )
Then create a directory somewhere, put the files from Installer.zip in the Directory along with the DLLs and ax files for matroska.
Then click right mouse button on the NSI file to compile it into an installer. The NSI file is just a text file and youll see how easy it is to add other filters in.
Hope you'll find it useful :)
-Nic
ps
http://nic.dnsalias.com/mkvmerge.zip is a vc6 compiled version of mkvmerge 0.4.4
http://nic.dnsalias.com/MatroskaInstall.exe is the final product once compiled with NSIS
@Nic
What's wrong with my installer? :D
Nothing at all :) I was just wondering how to make NSIS detect winnt and win9x and it lead to me making that...it only took 5 mins :)
Plus, I thought it might be easier for Christian (or someone closer to the team) to maintain the installer...hopefully my little script will help Chris do that (??? Who knows :) )

Err, actually, there is :o :o :o :o. I forgot to add uninstall support!! :( Luckily, you can uninstall by means of the uninstall batchfile... :D

I used the same method as used in the batchfile :). I get the environment variable OS and use it to determine NT/9x. But I dunno if you can do it that way with NSIS :).

@Nic : sorry, but something is wrong with your installer ... as New-Be stated on IRC, i tried, and it gives me that :

XP SP1 for me, XP (dunno which) for New-Be
[some try]
bouahah, funny .... if you run the installer a second time everything is fine then.
Thanks for the info Bill. Ive just re-uploaded the installer.zip for Christian and a new MatroskaInstall.exe (at the same links). This version seems to work fine (just tried it on a fresh machine running win server .net 2003)

Hi Nic,
thanks for your installer! It works great!
But I have three points:
1.) On a freshly installed WinXP system the uninstaller.exe file won't be created (at least in my case). Only if I run the installer twice.
2.) Gabest's VSFilter has two versions (in archive on sourceforge.net): With Unicode (WinXP) and without Unicode (Win98). Could you install the right version here the same way you do with mkxds.dll?
3.) Could you make the ChannelDownmixer.ax optional? Reason is: my friends and I use other filters therefor. And I think it does not really have to do with Matroska so there could even be an installer without this filter. Hope you can help here! Can you take a look at Matrix Mixer (http://matrix-mixer.sourceforge.net) and see if it is better than ChannelDownmixer? It is from the same author than AC3filter.
Thanks again!

I will hopefully tonight have the chance to test all installers, thanks so much guys, i really dont know how we deserve all this ....
Would be cool if we did the OS version check for vsfilter.dll also :) ....

@nic,
waiting for the new installer :)
By the way just a question: would it make sense to unregister the dll's before registering it? So, if old versions are somewhere in the system they would get unregistered first and the new ones would get registered. Don't know if it is necessary though.

Yes it makes sense, as it's cleaner than overwriting the registry.

@robux4:
by the way one question: with the installer pack I can watch all kinds of matroska files via zoom player or other media players. But not with tcmp as it always crashes when I have aac or subtitles included. is this normal behaviour? I have tcmprc3 matroska edition.

For subtitles, there is a setting in the TCMP setup to use external subtitles renderer. For AAC, you have to deactivate the equalizer in the audio settings ...

I've uploaded a new installer for ye guys. Very similiar to Nic's (http://members.boards.ie/the_edge/bow.gif) installer.
Both Matroska & VSFilter will automatically detect your OS and install the right parser filter. Uninstall included.
Also has the option to do a custom install so those not needing ChannelDownmixer for example can leave it unticked. Oh, and a wee icon too! I can supply the nsi script if you want.

Updated Installer. Now includes CoreVorbis v1.0b5.
I swapped ChannelDownmixer for Matrix Mixer (http://matrix-mixer.sourceforge.net/) as it is better IMHO. Does the same job and you can change speaker configurations on the fly. Nice visual graphs for each channel. And it's freeware too!
Here's the NSI. (http://members.boards.ie/the_edge/Files.zip) Feel free to update.

Hey Great Job Everybody with all the installs. Im sure this will help newb's allot. (myself included :o )
I'm glad to hear that the CoreVorbis will not interfere with my OggDS since I still use allot of OGM's, but only because of the chapter support.

@The Edge
Hey i just looked at your NSI file and you don't need to call the VSFilter or the Mxdxs filters by Xp or 98 if you put them in seperate directorys and just use
File winxp\vsfilter.dll
or use
File /oname=VSFilter.dll Vsfilter_xp.dll
so you don't have a few versions of the dll's laying around on the systems..
Just a thought.. but great work on making it easier to install all this stuff..

@Matroska team...
The installer of TheEdge is really great. You should include it as download on your homepage as it is really helpful for matroska newbies.

EDIT: indeed i was not clear in my post. Of course I have seen it on your homepage but as zipped format. So the installer will there be soon as you said. thats just fine :)

It was already there, in the CVS version of the download page, until the corecodec.org server went out of service. Pamel was putting an older version of the homepage online when he edited it for temoprarily use until we have CVS back, so the link disappeared again, and i was too lazy to edit this old version just for a couple of days. Corecodec.org is now running again, so soon we should have CVS and newer website version with correct links back ....

Hi The_Edge,
time for a new release? :)
Could u include mkxds v0.5.0, VSFilter 2.28 and CoreAAC 1.0 Beta 7?
That would really be great!!!!!!
Thanks!

mkxds 0.5.0
VSFilter 2.29?
Thanks in advance!

No need for MkxDs as long as it's not really stable (I'll have to work on that soon). For te AC3 and AAC decoders, it's a matter of license problems.
MarkCoolio
19th August 2003, 14:44
thanks for the answer!
Well but at least this package is for the ones that don't visit your official matroska site and download filters there (so that's the reason why aac and ac3 could stay included). It's more for testing purposes I think.
I agree with you on the other hand that the official installer from you should NOT include these 2 items.
So maybe we see an updated installer from the matroska team soon with the legally updated items :)
