I want to append an avi segment to my video files (actually I want to append the credits). In VdubMod the pop-up window appears when I press "file" -->"save-as". In this window we have the option to tick "save AVI in old 1.0 (VFW 1.1e) format (compatibility mode)".

Well ofcourse this is self explanatory. But why should a person use this option except for compatibility reasons? In what avi-format does the "normal" virtualdub append avi's?

The point is that I really don't know where possible problems would arise with compatibility. And what is meant by compatibility in this case. What do you guys always use in certain circumstances?

Maybe this is a dumb question, but I just want to know. :D

The normal VirtualDub also has a "Save as AVI" option and a "Save old format AVI" option. AFAIK, VirtualDub has no problem appending an "old format" AVI to an OpenDML AVI, or vice versa.

I imagine some ancient AVI tool that parses the file format directly might not support OpenDML.

I always use "old format" myself, but only because it's an old habit of mine and I haven't been able to train my mouse fingers to move up a notch!

I don't think the distinction really matters much unless you're dealing with AVIs larger than 2 GBs. VirtualDub can read and write "old format" AVIs up to 4 GBs in size, but most other programs won't like them.

VirtualDub always writes a legacy index, so that you don't even save any overhead by using Open-DML AVI.
