OK, so this may seem simple to some of you but as I've only had my burner 2 week please be gentle with me.
I've recently "acquired" a XVID version of a "certain" film lets say.
I would now like to put this to DVD so I can watch it on my lovely widescreen, it wont play through Media Player but is ok through VirtualDub.
Any one know where I can get a guide on how to do this as all the ones I can find tell you how to get XVID from DVD not to DVD :(

Welcome to this board :)

Doom9 has written a guide about AVI -> DVD (http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/mpg/avi2dvdr.htm). This guide should help you out.

WTF !!!! Just had a look at the guide to converting an AVI file to DVD. It would be easier for me to pull my teeth out by hand than to follow that guide !!!!!
Any other Idiot proof guide out there or do I need to go to university to take a degree in DVD structure....?

You don't have to totally understand the DVD structure that's explained within the guide to execute the instructions that are concisely laid out for you. If you print off a copy and just follow the steps, without letting the technical explanations confuse you, you'll find that it's not as hard, nor intimidating as it seems at first look. Give it a whirl, that's how most of us start! When you get stuck, post back in this thread and let us know what's getting you down. Someone usually shows up to help. Also, please drop the snappy acronyms.

OK, sorry for my first outburst but the thing just over whelmed me. I've managed to get Ulead Movie Factory which I was told would convert the files for me. However when I playback the AVI file all I get is a green screen. I can hear the movie but no picture. Any ideas?
Again sorry for my first impatience.

It's easy to feel overwhelmed, I've been there many times myself. The guides here are so much better than any of the text-based instructions that I've studied in classes, that it's not even funny. Pick a place and start.

You'll be treated with consideration and respect here at Doom9. Please return some of the same by re-reading the forum rules and thinking about exactly what each of them means. All of them. A link to the rules is located at the top of every page in the forum.

Yes! U r missing the codec to decode the video.

Since Media player can't playback the file u should install a codec to do so.

Obvious choices r ffdshow (http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Filters/ffdshow-20021213.exe) and the gordian knot rippack containing the xvid version by Koepi that u can find here (http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/gordianknot/GordianKnot.CodecPack.1.1.exe?download).

Have fun in the board and hold your temper :)

Or maybe even better install ffvfw. Then you can playback the file and work in vfw based programs with it.:)
