I've (re) tried the matroska container since its supports multi audio format.
My movie:
- a Xvid video file
- an AC3 5.1 audio track
- a stereo ogg vorbis audio track
- a second stereo ogg vorbis audio track
I'm using VirtualDubMob 1.5.1.1a
I also adds video chapters and video comments as title, author, performer, date.
The saving works great.
Then, I tested the mkv file in some players (with mkxds.dll or MatroskaSplitter.ax registred):
TCMP doesn't want to play the movie (although the info plugins describes me the tracks of the mkv file).
BSPlayer play the three audio track at the same time (as an OGM file)
MediaPlayerClassic works great! The switching between the audio track is good, the seeking a bit slow, but perhaps due to keyframe sync.
Thanks a lot for this contenair and Gabest for the great mplayerc.
Then, I open the properties box of MPC, and there is no information about the movie.
So I reopen the mkv file with virtualdubmod, and surprise, the additionnals tags are removed:
- language of audio tracks:
- performer, date, ... in video comments
- video chapters.
Should be (or would be?) these tags be compatible with matroska container or are they specific to OGM one?

VDubMod tags (except Title and Language) aren't taken into account for Matroska. The reason : at that time the tagging system wasn't finished so there was no way to read/write tags (Title and Language are stored somewhere else that's why those one could be written).
So that's normal you couldn't get useful information from the file you muxed (btw I am not sure that even now the parsers take into account the info such as the title or the track language).

Our tagging system is currently overworked, so despite the main tags, as Suiryc said, you shouldnt use them right now.
But work has a lot progressed on it recently, so i think its pretty close to be usable already ... i will ask robux4, Pamel and jcsston about this and update you here ...

ok, thanks for your answers. So I will wait a little more to mux my files... :)
I've tried also to load mono ogg vorbis soundtrack, but there are not yet supported by virtualDubMod and cause crash as said in the Bug Tracker (http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=738599&group_id=65889&atid=512619)

Update : final tagging was added to specs and library today .... now Cyrius, jcsston and the other app developers have to implement/support it ....

Sounds great...the new tagging system!
I hope that next VDMod version will support this new Matroska tagging system.:)
And I also hope that subtitels descriptions (languages,...) are supported, too (not only video/audio information like title, languages).
...because it's not very comfortable at the moment if I mux 2 or more subtitels in a MKV file because afterwards the MKV file doesn't report the language of the subtitles (only empty lines are displayed in the player)...so i have to guess  which sub( language?/closed-/forced caption) I have selected.

A tool to retag older matroska files would be greatly appreciated.

Any news on chapter-supporting tools, filters etc.??
This one is really the last thing missing from Matroska in comparison to OGM, thinking about to switch to MKV as soon as chapter support is done :)

Subtitles language description tags (tagged in vdubmod) are visible now, I've muxed 4 SRT files in MKV, and now I can choose whatever subtitle language I want using Gabest ' latest VSfilter filter.
Awesome! :)

I've read that the last versions of matroska (IRC/CVS) supports subtitbles tags and chapters.
When will it supported in VirtualDubMod ?
or which mux tool will support it first ?
