about elta 8882 MPEG4

I did only check out the firmwre for that DVD player. But I did it fast. It seams to be use LInux as core. But now it comes really wrid it seasm also be using Sigma Design Decoder chip inside.
if u check file KHWL.O in the firmware .iso file with a hex editor u will find it using the name RM, quasar, EM, SigmaTv and RealMagic in fucntion or error msg. it was only cloud I have, but I only know one company are using this name as function and error it is Sigma Design
thery home pages are also realmagic.com. It seam it is base on Sigma Design em85xx chip


So it is posibly Elta 8882 Standalone player are same as Kiss Kiss DP-500 or Kiss DP-450 Standalone player. After Kiss DVD paler are base on that chip

All DivX Players that are available today are based on the Sigma Designs Chipset.

the question is only.. which chipset exactly? the 8500 used in the first KISS players can play DivX3.11 up to a VCD resolution according to Sigma, which would mean it's useless for us (but then again I haven't heard much about the DivX3 capabilites of the KISS models, even the latest firmware upgrade for the elta doesn't support DivX3 yet, and other players are also still limited to DivX4+).
There's also so the Sigma 8550 chip where the product literature doesn't mention DivX playback at all, and the 86xx series which is HD capable, supports AAC and MPEG-4 Advanced Simple Profile including QPel (but without GMC, though seeing as this can be added via software as it was done for existing models it shouldn't be so much of a problem).
If anybody finds players using the newer chip models, let me know.

btw, you said xvid bframes worked correctly for you, have you tried a bframes setting above 1 ? In my tests the video does not run smooth with such a setting. And i also cant get xvid gmc to work.

Sigma Diesgin x-card (em8400) are can not play xvid b-frame correct yet. For xvid does not follow the mpeg4 iso specification yet.
Divx codecc can not etiher play xvid b-frame correct some time it can not play xvid b-frame at all.
So I am waiting on new version of xvid that office support of b-frame.

So it is same case with any em8xxx chip that are supporting the b-frame.

Codecc that I have try are

rmp4 (sigma Desigin modcation of xvid with b-frame)
Divx
3ivx
and some other codecc that support b-frame all these can (em8xxx chip play correct b-frame with)

I have a kiss DP-450 with 2.6.6 firmware.

Xvid play fine (but no qpel and only 1 successive b-frames is support)

if u encoding with rmp4 or divx you can use how many b-frame as you like. with out any decoder problem for (em8xxx chip).

The b-frame xvid produce are not the best qualtie or iso-compatble with mpeg-4 standard. It why Divx,rmp4 codecc and (em8xxx chip) have problem to play xvid b-frame. if you are using only one xvid b-frame it should work some time not. But if it work and some one do have sharp eye hi will see the bad b-frame.

AFAIK DivX supports only 1 bframe. Dont know about RMP4.
I thought that was the problem, more than 1 bframe.

sorry for this probably stupid question:

Is it possible to change the firmware for the elta player in that way that it has no problems with XCds ? Here are so many people around that are able to work on GKnot, dvd2svcd, Avisynth filters... what about a new firmaware for the elta with XCD support ?

No I dont, but AFAIK it supports ogms also (doom9 ?), think otherwise I have to test it by myself or wait for the "mecotek MK-X6000". You should be able to upload / install the codecs and filters needed, at least this was what I understood...

I don't know about XCDs but I'd bet money that it's not supported. Forget about anything that isn't used by a significant part of the potential clientele.. including XCD, OGM, Matroska and even subs are somewhat doubtful (though subs are still your best shot and more likely than a qpel supporting firmware update). Of course, if one manufacturer were to release the firmware (which is a version of embedded linux) that would change the situation considerably but I don't see that happening.

@baron: I said ogg vorbis audio was supported ;)

Hi doom9,

yesterday I bought myself the elta player. Now I know what you meant with "ogg-vorbis-audio". It does not play avis with ogg-vorbis audio (it is a bad idea anyway) and it does not play XCD or ogm. But the new firmware of the "Yamada 5500" (version 1.005) works with this player and it plays divx 3 and vbr audio without bigger problems. This was my test so far.

dual audio is no problem using either AC3 or MP3.
subtitles in subrip or vobsub format are not supported.
