Problem with shrink playback

i used shrink v 2.2 several times to do a backup, and the resulting video was great! the audio was there too. the disc (burnt with nero) played famously on my pc using power dvd. the menus and extras worked flawlessly. heres the but, you knew it was coming . . .my modded (hacked bios) xbox does not recognize the disc (dvd+r and dvd+rw) nor does my apex 600a standalone, which, as many of you probably know is a fairly robust dvd player in terms of recognizable media. (cd/dvd/vcd/svcd/mp3) any suggestions? just get a new player? by the way, i can play the movie through a program on my xbox called xbmp (xbox media player) but the prog doesnt support menus and i can only play it by navigating to the disc and selecting the ifo file. thanks, falcor

like falcor, I love the quality of v2.2. That said, I just did "The Animatrix" (*movie only*), created a image with ImgTool, and burned it onto a Sony DVD+RW using my DRU500A and the resulting disc would not be recognized by the xbox (this disc has been played there numerous times before).

Then I tried this disc in my Apex AD-1200 which reads anything you throw in there, and sure it enough, it played it, but when I tried to fast forward, the screen went black for about a second and then it went back to the default "APEX" blue screen. I did this process again, this time with the timer on, and I noticed that when I press fast forward, the player automatically goes to the beginning of each chapter (while still remaining at a black screen) until it reaches the last one, and then it stops. Keep in mind, this lasts like a second or less

hopefully this will help you dvdshrink. As I type, I'm doing the exact same process using v2.0 --- will post results soon...

just to correct myself, the media actually used was a Memorex DVD+RW

Results with version 2.0 =

On Apex AD1200: same as the v2.2

On XBOX: disc was recognized and fast forwarding worked, well sort of, it only works up to 2x, once I try to go to 4x or faster, it stops playback. It does the same thing the apex does actually.


PS: I'm in the process of testing this with the 1.03 version. Will post results later.

Thanks for the report. I just checked Animatrix and what do you know, it certainly does have a strange PGC structure. Ten cells in the main title, but they play totally out of sequence. I didn't know that was allowed! This will break any 2.x version of Shrink, I'm not sure about 1.03.

Is this related to the enemy at the gates "multiple cells within a chapter"? So maybe I'm not a looney toon after all and wasn't imagining the freezes with 2.2?

okay, just tried v2.3 and it worked perfectly, so good to be able to fastforward again. :) Congratulations dvdshrink, it worked both in my apex and the xbox

When i was using version 2.0 i always hat to fire up ifoedit after reauthoring and press 'Get vts vectors'. After that, the dvds dvdshrink produced would play correctly.

Any idea what "Get vts vectors" actually does? Presumably it just modifies the .IFO files?

see the manual procedure for correcting sectors. I think they're just setting within the .ifo the addresses of starting/ending points in the vobs. Actually I'm talking outta my arse cuz I really haven't a clue.

After reading what "get vts sectors" does, I am extremely doubtful that it would fix any problems with DVD Shrink files. I know there are bugs, but this is not one of them!

what am i doing wrong??? i got shrink 2.3 (thank you very much for your program, it is a lot faster than 2.2) and i did a shrink and burn (nero on dvd+rw) and it still plays great in my pc (power dvd) but not in my xbox or my standalone apex 600a (which, by the way i just updated the firmware on to a firmware that is supposed to recognize dvd+rw) could it be my media? just to make sure, go out and buy either a Memorex dvd+rw or a sony dvd+rw. those definitely do work on the xbox.

I've tried three xboxes (not dvdshrink but with backup games) all three of them would play DVD-R and DVD+R.
A) played DVD+RW and DVD-RW
B) played DVD-RW
C) played neither rewriteable format

So all xboxes are not created equal..there are three various dvd-rom drives. So before saying it's dvdshrink get a backup game to work first with your xbox and once it's working use the same media for your dvdshrink movie.

hmm, allright, i'll try your valid suggestion. i never had the need to make a dvd backup of a game since i slapped a 120 gig hdd in the xbox and play all games right off the hdd, but i will try it. i do happen to know that the dvd-rom drive in the xbox is a Thompson drive. maybe i'll just upgrade the dvd rom drive in the xbox, hmmmmmm:D

ok, i did a game backup using recordnow max and it worked fine in my xbox. so its not the box, but, like i said, the dvd backup of the movie (starwar episode two, attack of the clones) worked fine in my pc and i took the disc out to circuit city and tried it in a kenwood dv 605 standalone, and it worked fine theree also. so, to recap,
i have a xbox that recognizes dvd+rw, i have a movie that is on dvd+rw, the movie plays on a standalone kenwood, the movie plays on the pc, the movie does not play on a xbox. so, by process of elimination, i dont know WTF!!:confused: :confused: as a side note, i tried to do the movie, which was originally burned in nero, in recordnow, and i did a data disc, udf with joliet, track at once, closed, and every time i go to record, it terminates the program with the "encountered a problem and needs to shut down" message. :angry:

'm not sure . . . i tried nero, i tried recordnow, now i have tried copytodvd and tossed it in my xbox, eureka!, well almost. the movie plays. the menus work, but there is no highlighting of menus, in other words, i cant tell what selection i am selecting. so i need to just push buttons til the movie plays. i am going to try it in my apex after i disable the region check, cuz, i tried it in there and it gave me a wrong region error, which is strange, cuz shrink does its thing region free. hmmmm

ok, well i got it all sorted out. shrink 2.3 works great! xlnt job shrink! i found, though, that unless i use the program "copytodvd" the discs will only play on my pc, not my standalone, and not my xbox. from what i have read, i could be unique here, but i am sure that the laws of probability state that someone will have the same prob i did. so, there it is! thanks for listening., falcor:D

not sure if you understood what I said. I can guarantee you the xbox thomposon dvd drive will not play dvd+rw. Burn on dvd-r and report back.

i am sorry, yet pleased at the same time to disagree with you, since my xbox thonpson is in fact now playing dvd+rw flawlessly. in my particular case, it was a matter of using the right burning software. :D
and i guess my last post was a little vague, but i said "unless i use copytodvd" but now that i do use that prog, the xbox plays rw. cheers

ok I stand corrected. Anyway out of the three xboxes only one would play memorex dvd+rw, two played memorex dvd-rw and all three play dvd-r and dvd+rw. Guess I'm not exactly sure which one had which dvd drive in which xbox.

NP, i am just glad that i got it working. i was just about to shell out some $ for a new kenwood dvd player (which i still might do)but for right now, if i can save a few $, thats more i can put toward my onkyo 7 speaker 750 watt home theater system woohoo!!!:D

Simple solution....
The Apex600 can't handle DVD+R good enough.
If the ROM-Loader inside is a DSL-600 you surely have to give it up. If it's a DSL-710 you might try a later firmware. But even then it matter which generation loader it is. I have 2 Apex600 players, both with a DSL-710, one of them gives freezing problems with some DVD+R's. While if I play the exact same disc in the other Apex600 with a DSL-710 it does play flawlessy.
The only difference between the machines is the generation of the loader.
The none playing Apex600 has a DSL DVD-loader with firmware LO-16 (16 is the latest firmware for this LO series) The right playing Apex600 has a DSL DVD-loader with firmware LT-24, 24 is the "latest" firmware for the LT-series)

In this case the LOADER is the problem.... get the loader out and build in a newer loader that is RPC1 which handles DVD-/+R(W) and your problem is solved.
Many people did exactly the same thing with their Apex600.

yeah, i have a LD10 (?) which i upped the firmware on, and it now plays the dvd+rw's fine. i havent tried a dvd+r yet, but i am optomistic. what did you mean in your last post when you said you have a harddisc build in it?? sounds interesting. sh*t, if i can get my email off my XBOX, i should be able to drop a hard drive in my dvd player!:D
