View Full Version : MaestroDVD: Conversion of subtitles from PAL to NTSC

I have currently finished several DVD projects in PAL.
Now I would like to do the same project in NTSC.
I switch the preferences from PAL to NTSC in DVDMaestro.
Re-encoding the video assets in NTSC is no problem.
Dropping them in the timeline instead of the PAL asset neither.

However, the already in place subtitles are already rendered into their respective subpictures I believe, and therefore don't display properly in NTSC.

What can I do about this the easiest way possible?

Should I rip my own DVD's and somehow substitute the PAL subpicture steam with NTSC subpicture?
How can this be done and how should I re-mux the video, audio, menu and subpicture streams with everything staying in sync?

Thanks.

create a small app to edit your subtitle file and add a certain % to the times of each subtitle depending on the lenght change of your m2v.

No, thats not what I have in mind.
I typed all the subtitles in the video window, and added a 12 frame blend-in and out to each of them.

Upon compiling the project the subtitles are rendered to a subpicture of 720*576 because of the PAL system settings.
When I switch the same project to NTSC, drop in a same length NTSC video stream with the same GOP structure, (in both PAL and NTSC I use 6 frame GOP's), the chapter points usually match up exactly, provided I correctly used the system conversion script provided by this forum.

The rendered subtitles however stay at 720*576, instead of being converted to 720*480 upon muxing the project to VOB under the NTSC settings.

If I could somehow save the subtitles as cue points and text, with blends and all, that would be fine, I could just drop them in the NTSC project and have them re-rendered correctly I suppose.

Or if I could save or rip the PAL subpicture stream, re-size it to NTSC dimensions and re-mux it in the final project that would also be fine. I cannot program at all, so your suggestion is a little too ambitious for me.

Any other ideas to solve this problem?

If u have typed the subs in one by one u r in trouble. However if u have the subs in stl format, open the file in notepad correct the subs position to lift them and re-import before u change the video in order to be placed in the exact same spot.
