reasonably priced PCI - PCMCIA adapters?

I'm about to equip my household with WLAN and since PCMCIA (PC Card) are both cheaper and more readily available, I'd rather get such an adapter (that I can also use in a notebook if needed) and a PCI - PCMCIA bridge but everywhere I look, I either see no such thing, or only horribly expensive equipment. Components that are used in every notebok out there cannot cost $250. Does anybody know of a place where I could get a reasonably priced adapter?

Most 802.11 'PCI' cards that you can purchase are just that. Its a PCMCIA card in a PCI adapter. Even many access points are just a casing with a slot that the PCMCIA card goes in.

I can second that... i have an access point that contains a pcmcia card and also two desktops both equipped with a PCMCIA adaptor + a PCMCIA wireless card. unfortunately as you said, those are fairly expensive. you will not get much below €200 for an adaptor and a PCMCIA card.

but i can promise you it is worth the expense... there's nothing like sitting on the balcony on a summer evening typing away your doom9 messages :-P

well.. I know how PCI WLAN cards are made, but those retail for a much lower price than a standalone adapter which once again supports my theory that those adapters can't be too expensive.

btw, since I'm looking for a pci adapter that means it's going to be put into a reguar, stationary PC, not a notebook, so no roaming around the house. But I'll be able to write short messages and check out the heise pda newticker on my PDA for which I already have a (CF) WLAN card.

@insertdisk: it looks like it.. I'll have to get some more info on the product when I'm at home but that's more the price range I was hoping for (and since my school has a lab full of computers with such adapters I doubt they'd have gotten adapters that were more than twice as expensive as the wlan cards they plug into those slots).
