Which one produces best Movie Only quality? [Archive]

Hi all

I've just recently discovered this awesome program, dvdshrink (many thanks to the author for the magnificent work and frequent updates).

Ok, here's my dilemma. I'm only interested in Movie Only backups and first off I tried IC setting it at 99.9% which produced an overly undersized 3.6G result (2.35 aspect with lots of dark scenes I presume).

The big question is which one of these (dvd2one, dvdshrink or dvd95copy) would give me the best quality given the same resulting final size of 4.36/4.35G?

Is it really down to individual perception or are there technical differences to be had? Given that the 3 programs might use different transcoding algorithms, how would one make an informed choice?

Any feedback most welcomed, many thanks in advance.

Hi! this is what i have found out ...

For MOVIE ONLY (who needs menus anyway zzz), the best quality method to rip dvds out there today is the DVD2DVDR+CCE method, of course the draw backs to this is the time it takes for CCE to do 3-4 passes, wich usually equalls to about 7-9hrs, depending on your system. The quality is without doubt the best, blacks look black, action is smooth, it really is quality.

The only other draw back to the above method is if your using NTSC dvds, this means that after your encode you have to play around with programs like DVDLAB or SCENARIST to sort out the final details (wich is a pain in the arse), i of course use PAL dvds (cos i live in AUSTRALIA), and after the 7hr encode im ready to burn. This is the easiest method for me at the moment, programs needed --> Bitrate Viewer, DVD2DVDR & CCE.

Trust me the quality is so bloody awesome, i am thinking of getting another PC (cheapo one) just so it can run all day ripping in this method.

For me the next method that delivers the 2nd best quality out there is INSTANT COPY, use this if you want the extras and or a dvd with a menu. You do get alot of macro blocks, and the blacks dont look as black, but its the best your going to get, if you want it fast (about 1 1/2 hrs) with menus and extras. Of course if you really want all the extras + DTS sound ect. Then your better of going to a sale and buying the bloody DVD! Of course when you start chopping extras or modifying the structure of the DVD with this program, it can make it unstable/unplayable in some stand alone dvd players. Programs needed ---> INSTANT COPY & PDI2ISO.

Then if you want quick 10-20 minute rips, you can use programs like DVDShrink DVD2One, ect. I had problems with pulsing when i used these methods, screens would pulse bright and dark, and the quality on high definition tvs was super crap.

Of course the best way to get a DVD onto your hd (for me anyway) is DVD Dycrypter, if you dont have this get it right away.

There you have it, tried and tested.

EDIT: shit i just actually read your post, lol. I wouldnt use any of the programs you mentioned just for the pure fact that they arnt true transcoding programs as IC & of course CCE are. But if your after a quick encode of a DVD, and not too worried about quality, then i suggest either the new DVDShrink or DVD2One.
