I'm new to this so am not sure.. I've tried doing I search, because I am sure someone would have asked this... but am feeling a little swamped with all this....
Any movie I copy/backup will be payable only with my computer player So I do not need to worry about vcd and all that.

I want to make the best copy possible there is too make...... But am lost on how to do it. Is Avi better then mpeg? the movie I rip I'd like to fit on one CD if possible but not that worried if 2 are needed.

I just want it to be as close to the original DVD in quality as possible.

#12, Do not ask "what's best?". (http://forum.doom9.org/forum-rules.htm)

But with the prerequisites you state, (1CD most of the time, 2 when needed) you should look at Gordian Knot and XviD (http://www.doom9.org/gknot-main4.htm). That will give you very good results, is quite easy to start using while versatile enough for the most advanced user.

And since this isn't about the application DVD2AVI I'm moving this thread to the newbies section.

The best for PC-playback is DivX-avi mit mp3-audio
spread over 2 CD´s.

You can do it for free with DVD2AVI for encoding
(I use DivX 5.02 by ca. 1400-1600 kbps) and VirtualDub
for compressing and muxing audio (leave the kHz as
they are and choose 192 kbps) and I´m happy with it :D )

have fun,
