after creating the 1st pass with virtual dub, do i just open the video and change it to nth pass instead of 1st pass. Do i specify how many passes i want or do i just do it over and over until i feel like stopping?

Just save the nth pass over and over again.
And take care that in the codec options the log file is alway being updated.

okay i think i got that
so after the first nth pass
would load the newly created divx file?
or would i load the orignal?
and also i loaded the wrong file for my first nth pass and encoded a bit and then cancled.
would that affect my encoding after switching back to the right file?

You have your original source and encode it 1st pass. After that you encode your original source Nth pass as many times as you like. Usually more than 3 passes should be unnecessary. For each Nth pass you can (but don't have to) choose a different name of the resulting avi, so that you can compare them after several passes. But beware of crashes! Because once a Nth pass crashes, the log file is destroyed and you have to start over again at pass #1.
So once you cancelled a Nth pass encoding the log file is useless. If you plan more than 2 or three passes you may of course make a backup copy of the log file and then go on encoding.
