Try to read and understand several guides on the main site (http://www.doom9.org) first. If you've got some problems afterward, just go and search an answer on this forum. If there's none, then post a new topic.

As whats been mentioned before, read the guides and get a rough feel for encoding...but there doesnt exist a "best" solution for any film. No two films will encode exactly the same...each movie will require patience and a lot of experimentation especially if you want to fit in onto 1 CD. I use Gordian Knot, have been for a while now...its for me the best and most accurate encoding tool out there. First i recommend that you get to know youre encoding tools first. What have you used? What codec? etc... but first read the guides and go from there...we all make mistakes and im sure you were not probably aware that there are forum rules that say search and read the posts first before asking questions...but hey no worries some people like to tell you off for this sometimes innocent mistake... i guess some people are more anal than others!! one word of advice..NEVER ask in any forum what the best settings are for a film cos "best" settings dont exist! its pure hard work on your behalf and others that create great encodes...hope this helps..best of luck...and dont forget to read between the lines and the small print cos it might be important one day!!

Good posts Justinus and especially folio. I also recommend GKnot if you're just starting out. It's kind of hard to go wrong with DivX5 anyway.

Yeah, like manono said. Try to use a rip pack first and see the result. If you're not satisfied with it, try to adjust some parameters in the rip pack until you get what you want.

After that, if you want to learn more, try to do it in more difficult way that is to do it manually (no rip pack, just install compulsary softwares separately). This way you would encounter more problems and incompatibility between each software. However, you also learn how to deal with it (search from forum) and learn how to customise your own methods and parameters of each movie (it's more flexible but takes longer time).

sorry about my unfriendly reply. That's why you should not ask what's best because it cannot be answered objective. You need to find out yourself if Gordian Knot is better than DVX, XviD is better than DivX etc. After you made a rip with Gordian Knot and DivX like suggested you could make one with DVX and XviD as well and judge yourself. The codec defaults in XviD are not made for 1 CD ripps, for 1 CD ripps you should change VHQ mode to 4, enable use chroma motion and change maximum B-frames to 2. All this will slow down your encoding but I bet it will look better than DivX

or are you a total newbie i.e. dont know what "full processing mode" is.

Check out AutoDub XP 1.75!! Will automatically create an XviD or DivX movie at the size you choose. Very easy to use and makes great looking videos when you use the two pass setting.

You may wanna use Ecuador's Avi Bitrate Calculator, found in here (http://ecuador.ebodyform.com/pcdvd/index.html). I don't know, but in my case, it gave me settings that e.g. when I tried to encode MIB 2, I just gave it the data and it computed it so accurately that when I encoded it, the result was to leave me minus 5MB in order to put a 695MB movie file, the DivX Pro 5.0.5 codec, Zoom Player 3.00 and the autorun movie launcher, all in one single 700MB CD-R!!!

If you take into consideration the number of people who have viewed this thread and then look at responses and then the fact that MasterCotrim has not responded. It would seem that he's been scared away!

It's true he should have read some of the info that's on the forum first. However, some of the info could be considered as being, a little hard for a newbee to understand. Some of it relates to applications that have now been upgraded, superseeded (or not available anymore) and some of the info is even contradictory!

If MasterCotrim is still with us I would first like to ask him (or her), what is the 'run-time' of the source that requires encoding to DivX. 60mins, 90mins, 120mins etc.

Oh, and welcome to the forum.
