What is the the best codec and size?

I have got my hands on a new codec (mp4ui) and other mp4 codecs when im using dvd2avi i get a list for compression, i pick off the codecs there are 4 mp4 codec which look the same and some others. i was hopeing that this would make a considerable difference to the size, but it has just made the film higher quality (same as dvd).
I get around 1400mb after to place on a vcd, i like the dolby down mix to keep the high quality sound, and in raw form this is around 1 gb in size and the film 900mb.

I want to make them smaller,
i have used WMP9 and used its encoder to make films smaller but the quality drops, i have the codecs for the editor as well, i used small video output- and got 7 the down load mp4-v3 to 212mb there is loads of blurring if i recored it large i dont know if this would make a difference?


What is the best size to use when picking the tmpgenc as i get this wrong and end up with a large picture and i believe this could be part of the size issue.

First mp4ui is not a video codec. It's gui for mp4ip tools. Please read some guides. I couldn't understand what you're trying to do. Newbie forum is right place to ask help after you have finished the reading.

You're encoding movies with WMP9? Windows Media Player 9?

Its got an editors suite with it, its a bit hidden to find but it s a free down load. when they were selling wmp9 it was said that it now is a media editor.
that site i made well.. it was fun trying to upload, and kept locking me out but it ....ilikefilms2003b/index.htm....
I put the urls up for these add ons there are two and about 60mb each.
it is a shame i could place the films up as it gave good exsample of size and quality, ie same clip, 210mb largest size down to 320kb.
but there is no difference to other software used to re-encode, only sometimes will wmp9 open dat files so there possibly is a way to get it to do it but it will handle several types of file format and gves you several file output types and rates you can save. i can believe im saying MS has made a usable thing!

has anyone else tried to us it?

You're just throwing in names of well-known codecs but obviously have no idea what they are, when and how to use which one of them and what is a meaningful method for encoding. Please, please do some serious reading of the guides before posting again on this forum!
