Utility that can split Divx Avis by filesize rather than by length

Hi all! :D

Sorry if this has been asked before.

When I am doing legal backups of DVD's that I own ;)

I run into a problem with spilting the VBR avi down the middle in terms of filesize, the avis are always 1.4 gig and splitting them into 2 700mb parts is proving to be a nightmare.

Does anyone know a utility or indeed a neat trick in VDub for splitting the video files into 2 700mb parts by FILESIZE not length.

Hello all !

you can split AVI file easily with VirtualDubMod (last version 1.5.1.1a I think...). open your file, and save it by pressing "F7". when the windows appears, you see that you've got a extra option called "segment outputfile". check this box and hit the file size limit you want.

I assume that virtual dub mod is a modified version of vdub, I just use the plain vanilla version ;)

I could be wrong, but I don't think file splitting has been changed in VDubMod from VDub vanilla. Although the VBR support in VDubMod could prove better for your particular situation.

Also, you have to realize that you can only cut a video on keyframes, so if you have very few keyframes it will limit your splitting options and the files could be a few MB off.

A while ago someone made a tool to determine the exact frame number to split at to reach the target filesizes, but I can't for the life of me remember what the name was :(. Hopefully someone else remembers it?

AviSplitCalc, available from Doom9's download page. It's a front-end calculator and GUI, using Nandub to do the splitting.

Hi Lion,

On the off-chance you do not require the 2*700MB segments to be playable-from-CD then you can use a general file splitting utility such as scalpel.exe, the parts need to be remerged [fc /b part1 + part2 movie] before playing.
