Is there any difference regarding decompression of avi file if it contains Stereo or Joint Stereo sound (syncronization problems or something like that)or it's all the same?

It's the same

Oh, one thing, if you make mp3s with the --r3mix switch, you may get sound distortions when you play them in avi.

Thanks! That's all I wanted to know.

In any event -- USE JOINT STEREO. I don't care which mp3 implementation we're talking about, hell even xing, joint stereo can only make things better when you're within a fixed or even variable bitrate. The only time it hurts (heh, and unnoticeably at that) is at around 320kbit/s. Presents such as --r3mix and --alt-preset standard all use joint stereo.

@ johnmk
I don't agree when it comes to encoders other than lame.
I read somewhere that lame is the only one that masters joint stereo perfectly.

stereo is not recommended for bitrates under 160k anyway.

I have also heard somewhere that Lame is the best when it comes to joint stereo (and VBR mp3's) and that Xing can sometimes make flanging sound in joint stereo. But I am encoding with Cool Edit's Fraunhofer mp3 encoder in VBR mode because I noticed that it is able to make smaler files than Lame. When I make file that has same size with Lame (in ABR mode) it cuts to many high frequencies. In VBR mode things are much better but file is bigger than with Fraunhofer. I'm talking about sound that goes in avi file and is from captured episodes of Star Trek and it's not music so I want to get sound compressed as much as possible but without losing to much quality. Till now I was encoding with Fraunhofer mp3 encoder in VBR mode but in Stereo because I was not sure how it handles joint stereo. Final average bitrate I get is about 99 kbit/s. From now on I will try with joint stereo.
