OK, I know I'm doing SOMETHING wrong, but I can't figure out what.

The problem. Have a set of SVCD MPEG2 files I need to re-encode up to DVD (it's my only choice, don't have the original sources any more, players I need to put them on don't like SVCD in DVD clothing. Re-encode is mandatory).

The input files:

480x480 (duh)
23.97 with pulldown to get 29.97

trying to just do a straight resize/encode in Procoder (have about 80 hours to do, so I want to take a simple path, ie. without AVSynth, et.al)

Mo matter HOW I mess with this, the output video has "hiccups" in the output (when played on the 'puter, haven't burned yet, but read on).

Loaded the output files in both an MPEG2 editor an VirtualDubMod and checked, I'm getting a block of 6 frames in a row repeated every 30 or so (well, duh.. 23.97 to 29.97).

The original SVCD files plays smoothly.
I've used Pulldown to make the SVCD stream back to 23.97
I've tried encoding both upper and lower frame first
I've tried encoding non-interlaced
I've tried encoding and the running pulldown on the output
and I've permuted everything I can think of.. no luck, still the 6 repeated frames in a row (causing the picture to stutter/freeze every second or so..)

I KNOW I'm missing something, I've searched and read and can't find anything that fits this particular problem (I probably missed it) but I at least admit I'm clueless here...

What am I missing???

When I want to put my SVCD's onto dvd, I use DVD Workshop.

I simply add the original svcd mpg files to the menu and do all the usual chapter stuff etc.

When I goto the final section of creating the dvd folder (VIDEO_TS) I simply select the option to use custom sizes.

Select 480x480 and the size and make sure I select the option to Not Convert Complient files.

Simply create the dvd folder, burn to dvd and everything is fine.

I have managed to fit 8 episodes of South Park (svcd's) onto a DVD with no problems, a menu to select each episode and motion menu's etc. and still have space on the dvd ;)

So it can be done in Workshop. As for other packages, not so sure. It sure does save converting/re-encoding the mpg files from svcd's. Time saver and obviously you get the same quality as the svcd and not dvd quality, but hey...there is no way you can better an svcd quality rip anyway.

Works 100% here. I bet if he tries workshop and my method it will work. There really is no need to convert the svcd resolution to higher for a dvd player to play them, no matter if they are on cd or dvd.

Only problem may be his audio stream. It might be 44khz instead of 48khz which dvd requires. But that is easily converted either externally or Workshop can do it too. (BTW latest version of Workshop allows you to add a seperate audio track for each movie)

Demux your mpg so you have a seperate audio track, convert it to 48khz using either VirtuaDub or HeadAC3he etc.

Load your mpgs to Workshop (480x480 svcd resolution) and load your seperate audio (48khz) for each mpg.

Create your menu's etc, then when done and ready to make the disc, just chose the custom mode, choose resolution 480x480 from the drop down option. Also select the Do Not Convert Complient Files option. And select 48khz for audio.

Then create a DVD folder. to burn to dvd.

When burning the dvd, I use the latest Nero and UDF/ISO mode and tick the XBox compatibilty option and every dvd produced plays in all players I have put the discs in.

Make sure you have a VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folder on the dvd. AUDIO_TS is always empty, but some players won't play your dvd's if this is missing. Also turn of Joliet mode etc.

Like I say, works 100% for me and I have made loads of dvd's with svcd movies and tv episodes etc. without the need to up the resolution. Which is pointless, coz it won't give better quality. And your dvd player WILL play them fine.
