OK, if this has been asked before, I don't see it while searching. And I went back and looked at all the thread titles for 5 pages and found nothing.

I'm at my wits end, I've been trying to cut out 49 stupid frames out of the middle of a compressed .avi file.

I KNOW virtualdub has let me cut out frames before, but I have no idea why it doesn't work now.

I have: 1 .avi file compressed using XviD
I am using: Latest version of virtualdub (I have also used earlier versions)

The thing is I'm backing up a 2-disc movie, and I need to cut out 49 frames from the center of the .avi so that the audio syncs up in the second half. I open vdub, select the frames I want gone, hit the "delete" key, the frames are "deleted" (I jump to the end and verify that the total number of frames has decreased by 49), I go to video => direct stream copy, then file => save as .avi. Although virtualdub "deleted" the frames, when I open up the newly saved .avi file, the frames are still there.

I have also tried doing this backwards (cutting out the portion before, and the portion after these 49 frames, then combining them back together). For some reason it only "cuts" by key frames, but I KNOW it has cut on any ol' frames for me in the past.

I've tried this on a DivX3 file, DivX502 file, and a bunch of random .avi files and it still does the same thing. I'd think I was going insane but I KNOW this has worked before (I had to make a rip of this same exact movie before, and I used the same method).

I have asked people in IRC channels, searched these forums high and low and I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Am I going insane?

That's simple: You can't cut out on non Keyframes without reencoding. VirtualDub was never able to do that.

What you'll need is AviUtl 0.98d (see the downloads section). Although it is not possible to cut on a "non-keyframe", AviUtil allows you to mark any frame as a "keyframe".

Load your avi into AviUtil, hit Ctrl+F to go to the frame you want, and then hit Ctrl+K to mark it as a keyframe.

The region select buttons (Mark in, Mark out) are on the lower right hand corner. Once you have selected your 49 frames, go to Edit > Delete Selection Range (hitting DELETE won't work).

Now, go to File > Save avi. In the Video Codec section, check the "No Recompress" box (equivalent to Direct Stream Copy in v/nandub). Note that marking new video keyframes will not have any effect on the audio, so check the "Disable" box in the Audio Codec.
Finally, hit SAVE....

I wish vdub/vdubmod had the "Mark current frame as a keyframe" function... it comes in handy sometimes :D

You even don't need to mark the frame as keyframe.
Just delete the frames and that's all. He will give you a warning "frame xxx fall due to keyframe" or" encoded frame exist, continue?" just clic ok.

He will copy the stream very fast except for the range when the frames has been deleted.

You can configure the shortkeys:

You need the enu098b.aul file. Put it in the same folder as AviUtl.exe.

open Aviutl, "file" "general setting" you will see "shortkey configuration" (or something like that). Do your configuration.
When you are done, remove the enu098b.aul so that only the enu098d.aul works. (The batch processing window is better withe the d version.)
