I like the preview function :D
p.s. still struggles with levels % sizing tho
Level 1 gave me the option of at least 35% with Road To Perdition Main Title which was far too much cos it shudda been nearer 20% to fit 4.37Gb :(
but I ain't gonna complain cos I don't even use it :D

Is it just me or has DVDShrink become slower ... and the result a tad better :)
dvdshrink
6th June 2003, 19:22
Hi,
Version 2.0 is slower, and the output slightly better, but more importantly the output is a lot smaller than 1.03 at the same encode level (the quality will either be the same, or better, depending on the level).
Macrovision protection is removed from the VOB files.
RCE region protection is NOT removed (yet).
Various issues about jerky playback and video corruption have been fixed (I think).

Dvdshrink,
First of all, thanks so much for all of your hard work and for putting out such a good program.
Second, I am still waiting to start backing up my dvd collection because it seems like every couple of weeks something new (and better) comes out. Thus, I don't want to start and have to redo the movies that I have already done.
So, my question is...do you see tremendous improvements to dvdshrink as far as quality, compression, features, etc. in the future, or do you see the improvements to be minor and mostly bug fixes, meaning that now would be a great time to start.
I already have the dvd-burner waiting to go!!!:D
Thanks again,

I used an older version of shrink one time and never again becaue I got some bad picture results. Don't know why, it just turned out like that. I never tried it again until now with 2.0 version. Is this the first version to do decryption on the fly? Thats a great feature. Is shrink the only one click app to do decryption for you? The other ones I've been using don't.

Looks cool with a few preliminary tests
If the compression engine can create the same quality results as IC than I think we have a winner in the "One Click" war
Does anyone know if its Transcoding like IC?
Doom9
6th June 2003, 20:51
dvdmaniac: no, it doesn't. IC7 uses a sort of 2 pass mechanism and has rather tight bitrate control. the DVD Shrink engine is less flexible. But then again... DVD Shrink is cheaper and should offer features and quality comparable to several other commercial applications.

Thats a shame because its so close to getting all the attributes of what I consider to be the perfect backup app -
1. An inteliigent easy to use interface
2. High qualtiy compression (to TMPG type standards)
3. Removal of unwanted Titles / Streams in a way which does not bugger up the structure and is compatible with the majority of Players
4. Selective compression levels by Title
5. Accurate output size
6. Intelligent recognition / management of Angles / SB
Non one app meets these standards, yet......

This program just gets more and more AMAZING. To bad that you cant do CCE this easy (maybe in the future - fingers crossed). Keep up the GREAT WORK.
Some things that would be really nice in the future
-optional 2 pass for better image quality
-option to remove menus/titles completely
-Ability to set what title should play fist (I like to start my dvds with the film, not the menu)
-Ability to trip the movie even when keeping the extras
-Ability to set multiple start and stop points (ie if there is some move, then intro credits, then the movie again - it would be nice to be able to cut out these credits that come in between)
-Function with episode discs
What would blow my mind is if you could get together with the ppl doing all the CCE work so that re-encoding could be an option (instead of just transcoding). This would also allow for converting PAL->NTSC and vise versa.
Again, this is amazing! I didnt see a donation link on your page - is there one?
Personally i'be more happy if dvdshrink would _not_ implement some of the suggestions, i'd like it to stay a FAST and EASY tool. Fix the bugs, make improvements but don't touch the features! ;)

This is very cool! DVDShrink 1.03 was already my favorite backup tool and the new version seems greatly improved.

Awesome work dvdshrink. I don't think enough people recognize tight and elegent coding when they see it, and this is a great example!! :-)
My main (and only) feature request (besides title removal of course): more compression levels! I'm fine with a slider or percentage spin box, even if it means a slight delay to recalculate figures. Example: reauthor of a given disc, the main title is 4.7gb all pared down only slightly too big), but the compression level 1 knocks it to 3.5GB. I know this has probably been said before, so sorry if I am just sounding ungrateful :-)
I also accept the fact that I know next to nothing about your compression algorithms and thus am probably asking for the impossible, but hey it never hurts, right? :-)
P.S. Anyone know why doom's guide says that compressing menus can produce "not very pleasing results"?

I don't think that this will ever happened. The way this program is structure doesn't allowed the option for an additional external encoder. However, improvements in it internal compression engine may be possible...

Here's a reminder concerning our feelings toward free software http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=52597
If you want to play with external encoders, there are programs for that, such as dvd2dvd-r. If you work with PAL, you'll probably be happy. But if you work with NTSC you'll see why external encoders are problematic.
This is not to say it cannot be done, it can (just not with the approach dvd2dvvd-r has taken). There are 3 things that muck up 1) GOP structure, 2) pulldown, timecodes, and other info, and 3) angles.
If the GOP structure does not exactly replicate the original then remuxing has to create a whole new VOBU structure to go with it (in DVDs GOP dictates the VOBU structure) - this leads to chapters being mis-aligned, stuttering, and audio desync.
Pulldown, timecodes, and other info can and should be replaced by the muxing program with that of the original. If new pulldown is created only FILM material has a chance of being correct. CAMERA or course, needs no pulldown, and the dreaded hybrid ...
Timecodes being regenerated can cause problems down the road. And, of course, without the original header information your Pan/Scan just sits in the middle of the frame, and Closed Captioning is gone.
Unless you reduce the movie to one angle, you then have the problem of how to pass the different angles to the encoder. You cannot simply pass the entire E0 stream, so you must run the encoder for each angle, producing up to 9 output files to be coordinated back into the DVD.
As I see it only encoders which follow the original GOP structure, or can be forced to follow it, are eligible for use as external encoders. AFAIK CCE cannot be given a template, and TMPGEnc doesn't follow it exactly.

Instant Copy can delete any part from the original DVD but DVDShrink cannot (instead, it can only reduce the "needed-to-be-deleted part" into minimal size "Slide-show"). Both IC and DS however can not get down to the closest possible 4.7GB limit. "(In fact, VERY INACCURATE). In order to complete a 4.7GB (or better say, 4.37GB) DVD, DVD2One is the easiest way, HOWEVER, without the ability to strip off the unwanted parts.
So, I have devised a reasonable method with the combining effort of the 2 software.
(1)Use InstantCopy to strip of the unwanted part and use 100% encoding method (actually, no re-encoding) to get the 1st-pass DVD contents (inevitably over-sized with more than 4.37GB).
(1.1)Use PDItool to recover the *.pdi to the normal DVD content.
(2)Use DVD2One to do the 2nd-pass by reducing further the InstantCopy 1st-pass product.
Result: Too bad, DVD2One does not complete the job because it finds that the InstantCopy 1st-pass DVD contents is not "intact" for some parts are missing.
Now my new method is to use DVDShrink instead of InstantCopy for the 1st-pass. The result is now OK with final size down to 4.36GB (standard size for DVD2One) with accuracy.
A 3rd-pass with InstantCopy (without re-encoding) to further eliminate the "slide-show" parts may make the final result perfect with some further reduction in final size. With some calculation, one may make a slightly-arger-than-4.37GB DVD2One 2nd-pass to feed into the InstantCopy 3rd-pass so that a final near-4.37GB DVD-R can be attained.

drpaul:
There's a good reason why there's no option to totally remove stuff with DVDShrink, because that way the original structure remains intact.
Sure you can go on butchering your DVDs with IC by removing Titlesets and this may work with a lot of DVDs but you don't need to wonder when some (more complex authored) DVDs will not function properly with this method.

Yes, with DVDShrink, one can get completely intact structure with the to-be-deleted parts reduced to "picture show/slide-show" remnants. To me, a more drastic method is to have them replaced completely with some dummy slide-shows at very brief moment of showing time (a blink of black screen) so that the "to-be-deleted parts" now are "deleted with intact structure". If the author of DVDShrink knows how, the future new version should be very much like InstantCopy but has an advantage over IC by preserving the original structure. By keeping such intact structure, a second pass with DVD2One can bring us to 4.36GB destination without pain! Or, hopefully, the future version of DVD2One should go like InstantCopy, being able to delete the unwanted parts at will and get us to the near-4.37GB size accurately at a much faster rate than InstantCopy.

It was and still is a great program
Just one strange thing:
I ripped a few movies with 1.03 and they are below the 4.38 marker.
But when i load these movies in 2.0 it says they are ABOVE the 4389 marker.
It seems 4.38 GB (1.03) is not the same as 4389 MB (2.0)
i believe the above marker in 2.0 should be 4472 MB (just like in dvd2one).
I now have set 2.0 to custom size 4460 (with a 12MB margin)
Am i doing something wrong, or am i right

DVD-5 is:
4706074624 bytes (I think)
->
4488 MB (not 4489, DVD Shrink seems to be rounding up) and the error margin is then subtracted from this
->
DVD target size of 4388 MB (with 100MB extra in case of error)

9th June 2003, 01:43
Blank DVD-R 4,489MB 4,706,074,624 bytes or 4.383GB
Blank DVD+R 4,483MB 4,700,372,992 bytes or 4.377GB
I set my error margin in dvdshrink 2.0 to 10MB.

I selected English subtitles abd de-selected all the other languages.
However, after burning the dvd, the englidh subtitles do not appear but the dvd brings it up for selection.
It appears the the file is missing.
Is this a bug in the new version???

I agree w/ drpaulng, is it possible (in the future) to just have either a blank screen for 1 second or, perhaps a quick mpg that says "content missing", instead of going to the slideshow setting? Something in my subconscious says that the slideshow thing is for a reason, maybe to keep certain vob pointers or time codes or some other such fancy thing intact :-)
BTW has anyone written like a "wrapper" for ifoedit in wizard form, that can help people like me that just can't seem to get the hang of removing content? ;-)

have you thought of giving source access to your transcoding routines to handful of selected people? I am sure you find some very capable people here who could help you with the math part (unfortunately, I am not one of them).

If your feeling adventurous you could move down one forum and use the DIF4U/ReAuthorist method to cleanly remove any unwanted PGC's and audios etc.. and reauthor your DVD with its structure intact (leaving everything you want to keep at 100%) and then take this oversized output and feed it into DVDShrink to encode the video to get to 4.37GB. (Of course you could just encode using CCE but that belongs in another forum)
I haven't tried this ReAuthorist/DVDShrink hybrid method but I can't see why it wouldn't work (unless DVDShrink choked on the dummy files that ReAuthorist creates maybe - but they all work flawlessly in all my standalone DVD players so it should be OK).
It's a bit messy and somewhat of the long-way-home but it should achieve what you want to do.
Cheers...

Hi,
so far I haven't heard too much from all you guys about the actual quality when using DVD Shrink 2.0!
The fact that it really is a professional piece of software with excellent ease of use remains undisputable. Also, its overall speed and the fact that you don't have to rip the original DVD first makes it somewhat outstanding. Plus, it seems to have less difficulties in dealing with multiangles/seamless branching in this latest version.
But qualitywise?
I did a copy of "Star Wars Episode II" (RC2/PAL) last night, setting the compression level of the main movie to 3 or 4 to get a reduction of about 25% (not too much compression IMHO).
I was clearly disappointed by the results. Macroblocks everywhere, especially in the yellow introduction text moving into space, but even worse in the first space scene in front of the black space - even on my TV, the macro blocks were very clearly visible!
Don't get me wrong - I definitely appreciate the programmer's effort, especially when regarding the "price" of DVD Shrink. But I would be more than willing to sacrifice some processing speed in favour of better picture quality. Therefore, I will stick with DVD95Copy which offers the best mixture of picture quality, possible compression settings and speed. Plus, DVD95Copy (like DVD2One) always uses the full capacity of a DVDR medium. Only if I want to copy a multiangle/seamless branching title, I use InstantCopy 7.
Anyone agreeing to my point? What do you say?
All the best,
G.

Ok, regarding the CCS (DVD copy protection) error I got while dvdshrink was reading the DVD...I just solved it. It turned out that my LiteOn DVD drive was not assigned a region to play DVD movies. It was basically a region free (i think). I just got this new computer earlier yesterday. I tried to assigned the LiteOn drive to region 1 and the problem is solved. Now, I can rip the files using dvdshrink. If any of you have the same problem, try assigning the drive to region 1.

That's not true! The quality of Version 2.0 hasn't really been discussed here - there were only a few guys saying that the quality has improved and only one or two saying that the quality is still not good. But no one compared it to its competitors!
But anyway - I will try the beta of 2.1 tonight and see if the quality has improved. Haven't seen it yet, but I thought that the beta has just two more compression levels!?

You did pick the most difficult example!!!
The first sequence in Star Wars II (with the letters scrolling into space) is composed entirely of P-pictures, with an I-picture every 12th frame. There are no B-pictures, which is very unusual. DVD Shrink tries to get most of its compression from B-pictures, which offer the best quality/compression tradeoff.
The results in DVD Shrink 2.1 are significantly improved at 25% compression, still some fuzziness around the edges of the text, but no visible blockiness. Beyond 25% this particular scene goes bad again, but the rest of the movie looks good at 45% or even 50%, in my opinion ;-)

Hi dvdshrink,
thanks for your fast reply, man!
I just checked what you wrote - and you are right; the quality has improved a lot! It almost seems that you have now won the war about the best "one-click-copier"; at least for the time being :) !
If now as the next step your "compression levels" could be exchanged for a "percentage option", the end of that "war" would be even nearer... :p
But I understand that this is a completely different approach than yours, right?
Keep up the good work, mate!

@ dvdshrink
Hi, first of all, thanks for your great work ! It is greatly appreciated :D
I've been experiencing a strange behavior with either dvdshrink 2.0 and 2.1 beta. I reauthored Starwars 2 Attack of the Clone keeping only angle 2. The movie plays fine (btw compression in 2.1 is far better looking than 2.0) but I'm unable to seek in the movie with PowerDVD. Is it a known issue ?
Thanks in advance,
Pasqui.

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone would notice this!
In re-author mode, seeking is ok for Angle 1. For Angle 2, I can't copy the TMAP table because it is only authored on the disk for Angle 1, so I discard it and the result means PowerDVD seek bar doesn't work.
This will be fixed in a later release.

I have been trying to use DVDShrink on a really complex DVD. It has 7 VTSes, each of which have well over 100 PGCs (most of them in TTN1). VTS 1 alone has 243 PGCs, 1-241 are in TTN1, 242 is in TTN2, 243 is in TTN3. DVD Spec states a max of 99 titles per VTS, but doesn't limit PGCs, so I'm assuming the max would be 255. Scenarist states that 242 is the limit, but I cannot confirm this.
Anyway, when I try DVDShrink, it starts reading the DVD and then errors with "Insufficient System Resources...". My system has 1 GIG of RAM, and at the time of running this, I had about 600megs of it free for use.
I can supply .ifos and whatever else you may need. I'd really like to get DVDShrink to work with this title!

Max PGCs is 999 per title, 32,767 per VTS. Any other limit is a limitation of the program.

Thanks, I was wondering about that. Scenarist claims players might have a problem with PGC counts > 242.

Hi
Anyone had a problem trying to read a disc that has already been backed up?
I use copy to DVD to burn my dics but when running these movies through DVDshrink it comes up with a message saying incorrect iso volume lable and wont continue,i then have to re-rip with decrypter then use file mode.
the only reason i would like to be able to do this is because i have made some backups with 2 movies per disc and want to put 1 movie per disc now,
if it is a case of using different burning software, any recommendations as to which to use, copy to DVD works well for me as disc will play on ps2 and some tempramental players which wouldn't work with nero
thanks

First things first:
Thank you very much for this excelent software. :)
Doubts:
One great feature of DVDShrink is the still movie compression. It saves a lot of space but still I find it a bit odd that it doesn't save even more. I don't know how bigger than P-Frames the I-Frames are but for an I-Frame every 25 frames (I guess that's the average), taking 10% of the space looks like too much since it's 1/25 = 4% of the total frames.
Of course this all changes if I-Frames are 4x bigger than P-Frames. This should come at 4x4=16% of the space. I'm not even putting the B-Frames in the pan which should be even smaller than P-Frames so this percentage could get even bigger. Again, unless of course you are heavily quantizing the I-Frames which I think you are.
Right?
Feature Request:
In Still Pictures you are taking just the I-Frames right?
I believe if the frames are still there, and since they are taking up the space, we should be able to play these streams. The problem is that there seems to be no indication of the dropped P-Frames and B-Frames. What I mean is that the video plays (imagine 1 I-Frame in every 25) at 25x while the audio plays at 1x. Total desynch and useless stream.
Can you place dropped frames where the P & B-Frames should be?
Whould it increase too much the filesize?
Another Feature request:
I'm probably the only one looking for this but here it goes:
I would like (I don't know if it's ther in 2.1, I haven't had the time to test it yet) another high compression Mode.
Can you create a new Almost Still Movie Mode?
This mode would have:
I - Level 3
P - Level 3
B - Dropped
This could also be achieved if you allowed the user to customize compression levels for each kind of frame. And I wouldn't say no to a Level 4 with even higher quantization.
I know that it falls from the target croud of this program but could win you a lot of the tweakers around...

Would it be possible to make DS able to process MPEG2 streams instead of VOBS? That wuold be useful to shrink capture content or other MPEG2 stuff a little bit without reencoding.
Whats about the compatibility? Are there known problems with DS output in Standalone Players?
I like DS very much. Thank you.

Hi,
I-pictures appear every 12th frame PAL, every 15th frame NTSC, except for 3:2 pulldown mode, in which case every 12th frame NTSC as well. They take up anything from 25% to 50% of the source bitrate - yes, they are big!
My transcoder at maximum gets about 50% compression, so do the math and you'll see why "still pictures" mode reaches the target size it does.
I never heard of any problem where the remaining i-pictures played at "full speed" in this compression mode. Is this a bug I should be aware of? As far as I have tested, they play at approx 2 frames/sec and remain synchronized with audio and subpicture.
I will consider various "alternative" requests for different compression modes. The user interface is flexible in this respect, anything goes ;-)

They take up anything from 25% to 50% of the source bitrate - yes, they are big! Well I was used to MPEG4 codecs taking 1-2% of the bitrate for I-Frames so I'm completeley .If you are saying you achieve at maximum 50% compression I'm surprised how you can get reductions to almost 10%. It's a pity you can't quantize them more because from where I stood watching, these I-Frames looked pretty good to me.I never heard of any problem where the remaining i-pictures played at "full speed" in this compression mode. Is this a bug I should be aware of? As far as I have tested, they play at approx 2 frames/sec and remain synchronized with audio and subpicture. When I played it from my harddisk with PowerDVD 4 it didn't played like you say (1/2 Fps) but I think it showed one of the frames (I don't recall wether it was the first or the last one from the stream) and nothing more...
I will retest this tonight as I got the feeling from opening the Still Pictures stream VOB in VirtualDubMod that the I-Frames were consecutive, and then I'll give you news.

11th June 2003, 17:37
Hi,
The i-pictures are consecutive, but I insert a sequence_end_code after every picture, and change the gop type to closed_gop. The resulting stream should be identical format to a DVD Slide show, which is part of the dvd specifications. Each i-picture will be displayed at the correct PTS.

From DS 2.1 Release Notes(?):Fixed bug where "Still Pictures" mode failed while encoding menus. This was probably the problem, I'm sorry I wasn't more specific, I didn't thought it mattered...and still hadn't tested 2.1 (it was a long weekend here in Portugal, I just got back to work today)
Thanks.

Hi,
I tried 2.1 beta on Sum of all Fears (Pal / RC2).
1. Created an ISO with DVDecrypter, mounted it with DaemonTools
2. Ripped with DVDecrypter in File mode
Reauthored and shrinked using Level 2. Both times the process stopped at 64%.
Anything else youīd like me to try?
Thanks for this great piece of software though! :-)

A little bug report.
I backed up "A very merry pooh year" on a Maxell DVD-r, reauthored, MMO stripping some language and sub streams. The symptoms are repetative (neverending) loop at the Disney logo-animation intro, plus what seems to be random stops at the end of chapters. The errors can be overridden by skipping to the next chapter.
I used 2.0 and have double checked with a trusted Verbatim DVD-RW. The movie is small enough to pass uncompressed. As luck would have it this was the first time (on more than a hundred succesful burns) that I didn't burn on RW at first ... just typical :)
My player is an eat-it-all Philips 622.
I'll try 2.2 tomorrow and see if I can reconstruct the error.
cheers

Hi,
I was having a similar problem.
I was using DS 2.1 beta to copy Pinocchio, I did it three times, twice directly from the Original DVD and once using the iso image. Each time I used level 1 (5% compression), and each time DS stops at the last 6s with a message saying that DS has encounter an unknown error. I tried to find the option of turning on the log so that I can send the logs for you to investigate, but it seemed that the option is not available.
Thanks.

A lot of these crashes seem to be caused by a disk read failure. I shall have to add a "retry" message.
DVD Shrink outputs the log file to "Application Data" folder, on XP systems this is:
C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\DVD Shrink\
On Win98 or other systems, I don't know ;-)

Thanks for a great program. One request - Could you automatically generate the output directory based on the name of the DVD - like DVD Decrypter does? Ideally allow the user to specify a target directory (eg D:\) and then you create the D:\DVDNAME\VIDEO_TS directory.

I also have this problem using winxp. V1.03 and v2.0 worked fine.
Both v2.1 and v2.2 give the same error message. If I try to use DVDshrink to rip the DVD it gives the error 'disc not found' - it may be 'drive not found' (sorry I'm at work at the moment and cant remember the exact message but I think its the latter error message about the drive.
All other programs can find the drive no problem.
I can use DVD decryptor to rip the dvd to the hard drive but when I point DVD shrink to the folder to start work on it I get a similar error as Hippoth.
"DVD Shrink has encountered an error and can not continue this operation
Hseek failed
Reason:unknown"
I dont get any error messages about this drive or ripped files etc from any other program including all the other 'point and click' DVD programs.
Most people dont seem to have a problem with these versions so i dont believe its the program. Anyone have any ideas?
thanks

Tried it with 2.2 as well and the error remains. I even generated new ifos from the vobs from IfoEdit, but to no avail. In parallell I've been doing "snow dogs" (also Disney) which seems to be just fine. I know that international Disney productions like to stack loads of PGCs and that they have caused many problems to rippers in the past. Evidently all issues aren't completely ironed out.
Will try Dvd2One and IC tomorrow. If they show the same behaviour it just gotta be the ripping of the image that has somehow gone awry. DvdDecrypter has always done it's job for me, but ... who knows I just might trace it there.

After a (very i might add) successful backup, i came across something that i find very hard to not have been reported by now. So, if it was, accept my apologies beforehand.
When de-selecting some subtitle streams, after the backup is complete, the end result is they still appear as "selectable", even though the streams are obviously empty.

I tried it on both and it worked fine for me. I cant really be of much help because I dont know what the problem was in the first place. It might have beeen a bug but then a lot of people didnt seem to be having this problem.
The error you were getting was "The reason is: Das System kann die angegebene Datei nicht finden." which I believe means "The system can not find the indicated file"
I know it may sound silly and I mean no offence but are you pointing it at the VIDEO_TS.ifo or one of the other *.ifos - I dont know if it makes any difference but I've been pointing DVDshrink at the VIDEO_TS.ifo file.

Hi,
That proggy rock!!! I love it, as a programmer a can only say "CONGRADULATION" it's a really efficient program...
Here is my 2 cens through ... I love the still picture feature, but it would be nice to replace the whole stream to a black movie ... so that way we can remove some parts like FBI warnings or any other nag ... and I genarally do the movie only on one DVD and put the extras and menu on an other DVD, to do the extrat I only remove all audio stream and compress picture to still images, but if I could only replace the whole movie by a black picture it would be nice too and saving 500~600Mb more, this will not affect menu the movie will still play but a black picture will be shown
I got a strange error with the movie "Tears of the Sun" RC1 when I have removed the movie to keep the options, PowerDVD will not play it, the DVD say that this movie can only be played on DVD Player that have not been modified (ie Region Free DVD mod). But my movie only version play fine.

Hi Hippoth
I put the dvd in the drive and started dvdshrink 2.3beta and it analysed ok by 'opening disk' and it worked ok.
I then tried 'open files' and pointed it to the video_ts.ifo and again had no problem. I then tried pointing it at the vts_01_0.ifo and it started to do its thing but then bombed out after a few seconds with this error
"unhandled exception OnIdleFile"
not sure what this means as I'm not a programmer.
I then clicked ok and tried pointing it at the video_ts.ifo and got an erro saying it couldnt find the dvd drive!
I closed dvd shrink and then pointed at the video_ts.ifo again and it worked fine.
Maybe it needs the full structure information in the video_ts file.
Try pointing it at the video_ts.ifo file and see if that works.
Its really a question for dvdshrink to answer I think.
