480x480 res? wait did I miss something?

hi :D
ok when I encode a 704x480 res video, tmpgenc ALWAYS says 480x480....why?....cause it always played correctly aftrwards... except for yesterday, when mediaplayer showed me a 1:1 ratio video ... and that never happened on mediaplayer...well my computer had been up for days anyway..so I restart and everything is fine.

also I know the standard is 576x480 or something like that, but I've had no luck trying to change the output resolution....can anybody help please?

at the end my questions are these:
1.-will I have compatibility problems with 480x480 res?
2.-if so what options should I use on tmpgenc?

3.-also...why 480x480? I don't think programers just missed that one

I have done a dvd burn using 480*480. The thing is, you need to effectively 'lie' to the dvd authoring program by telling it the mpg is really 352*480. Look in Doom's guides about converting SVCD to DVD. This is what got me thru to a really decent looking dvd. The main prerequisite seems to be, your dvd player must be capable of playing svcd's in the first place. I have since tried experimenting w/illegal formats (720*296) and encoding as 720*480. I ended up with a movie that was full screen (4/3) instead of 16/9. Seems to me since any ifo I have seen so far allows for automatic black bars or cropping black bars or pan & scan, you may even be able to get away with doing a 1:1 encode & letting your dvd player stretch it into position.(have not tried this myself yet..will get back on whether this works or not).

actually it does help
but what I really want to be sure is if this dvd will be playable :S..cause if not I have to reencode...now what I was told as you also said....that at the end the image will be stretched anyways :S

also...what is the standard resolution of svcd playback in dvd players?

why is nero not giving me any trouble when I import these 480x480 files into a svcd compilation? :S

NTSC=480x480 PAL=480x576. How to be sure?
Well, if you have never done one before, then you can't be "100%" sure. But you CAN be reasonably assured.

Lookup your particular DVD player, Chances are you will find it & discover the limitations and (in this case we hope..) LACK of limitations your player has. HUNDREDS of DVD players listed, as well as What media seems to work best, can or cannot play svcd format, highest bitrate for vcd or svcd your player will do...yada yada yada..

Then if you find out good stuff about your DVD player,
