(S)VCD with AC3 audio?

Hey,

is it possible to create a working (s)vcd bin/cue image with ac3 5.1 audio?

I am personally saying: No way, but someone else said Oh yes, so, how is it really? :) Thank you.

You can create such SVCDs, but only a few Players will play them correctly (mostly without any Sound).

BBmpeg can multiplex an ac3 file with an otherwise svcd compliant mpg video stream. You could author as a non-standard SVCD, but I doubt much of anything would play it.

Are you maybe just thinking of 5.1 audio in a SVCD? This is supported in the specs, its called multichannel mpeg audio. I-Author can make these and there is a philips encoder which can create these, or you can use DVD2SVCD which incorporates the philips encoder into the program.

The problem is that multichannel mpeg audio in a SVCD is not supported on many player/receiver combinations. Practically speaking, if you are making SVCDs than you are probably stuck with 2.0 audio, but that still sounds pretty darn good when decoded to Dolby Surround, Prologic, or especially Prologic II.

I'm just wondering if I can multiplex multichannel mpeg audio with another multiplexer than I-Author? Is it possible or is I-Author the only tool for multiplexing multichannel mpeg audio?

I've tried to use I-Author and I've made a .MPS file with the multiplexer and then used the I-Author for authoring. When I-Author makes a CIF image it seems to be OK, but when I try to burn the image with Easy CD Creator it gives me error. It's something like this (I don't remember what kind of error it was exactly but anyway): "The lenght of the image doesn't match with...". I can't edit the whole image with any imagetool like CDmage and IsoBuster. So the image seems to be corrupted in some way. Does anyone know what's the problem?

Then another question: Can I author the MPS file made by I-Author multiplexer with some else program like VCDEasy? VCDEasy doesn't accept the MPS file, so is there some way to convert the MPS to regular MPG so I could author the MPG with any authoring software?

I don't think anything else can multiplex mc mpeg audio besides I-Author, but I'm not positive about that.

I-Author is a very old program. EZ CD Creator changed their proprietary .cif format slightly between versions, I think from 5.0 and up. So anything from this version on simply will not accept I-Author created .cif images.

There are certain other limitations that I-Author has due to its lack of support for newer operating systems. I forget the number, but you are limited to how many items you can use in your project. I think its somewhere around 40. If you use too many, than the resulting disk image is corrupt. Other than that, you should have no problem buring I-Author created cif files in either Ez CD creator versions before 5.0, or converting the cif to bin and cue in the latest version of CDMage. You MUST use the beta version of CDMage, other versions will not work and I am fairly certain that ISOBuster cannot convert an I-Author created cif file to another disk image. At best it would only be able to extract the video stream.

No, you cannot use the mps in any other authoring program. Believe me, I've tried. You can convert an MPS to MPG and vice versa using MPGxMPS, but you'd lose the mc mpeg audio.
