I have a TV Wonder which can record to mpeg 1.
These files take up about 3.7 GB per hour.
When I convert the video to DivX and the audio to mp3 using I can get them down to about 300 MB without any lose in quality. But it is very time consuming to do each file one at a time. I would much rather have an entire folder of files converted overnight.
So my question is what if any program will let me do batch conversions and which one's should I use.
I am interested in using the best program, non necessaily the easiest.
Thanks.

Welcome:
Here's (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=49178&highlight=batch+conversion+with+DivX/) a detailed solution submitted by idbirch2 using DVD2SVCD. If it doesn't suit your needs, try a search using "batch conversion with DivX" or something of that nature, you'll come up with a lot of good information. While you're digging for clues, the stickies at the top of each forum's home page make for some informative and interesting reading. You'll also need to be familiar with the forum rules which are located at the top of each page. Rely on the search button heavily, it's a very valuable tool here. Good luck, and enjoy!

Hi,
ok, you are looking for an batch program to convert multiple files really easy, so our Software can't do it right now. But what it can do is to add multiple Jobs [max. 255] with all Settings you need ! And it's the fastest software I know to convert MPEG/VOB-Files to Divx/XVID or any other video or audio codec ! :D
You can see our "Encoder comparison" at your Homepage ! :D
Just look at http://www.wolf-town.com and make your own decission about the program ! :D

I noticed that you forgot to use Vdub and Vdubmod in your comparison test. I don't think it's a fair comparison, since some ofthe other programs you used, are obsolete and not comonly used to encode videos anymore. (DVD2AVI and XMPEG)

Ya, but we don't forgot it. Virtual Dub (+ Mod) and Vidomi are tested in a later comparison. :D
Why is the test not fair ? DVD2AVI and XMPEG are used to encode MPEG/DVD videos more than you think !
I know friends of mine and get lot's of E-Mails where people tell me that they still use these programs ! :p
And why are these programs still developed if nobody uses them ?
And we test these programs, because they were developed to rip DVD's or don't they ? ;)

Well I know that's what they were intended to do, but now no one uses DVD2AVI for actual encoding, you use it to create your D2V project which you can manipulate in a bunch of other programs. As for XMPEG, it's always had problems with off synch audio and well it's just old now. I know people still use it, but there are much better and faster software tools right now. The reason I thought it was unfair, was because Vdub is probably one of the fastest encoders around, and it wasn't metioned in your guide. So that comparison, wasn't actually showing a real comparison between your encoder and probably the most widely used encoder around. I mean how can we draw a conclusion that yours is better, if we can't really compare it to the one we use?
But good luck with your program. I'm sure it'll get off the ground in no time.

if DVD2AVI can handle your files it could be done with a DVX plugin, .NET 1.0 supports VB .NET, C# and JScript .NET maybe I could try it if you don't know one of these languages

how about recording direct to divx with wave-audio and
trimming and encoding audio with VirtualDub? ;)

Please read Rule #5! Or better yet, read all the rules!

May be XMPEG 5.0 (http://www.xmpeg.net) is a good solution to process your file. You can open all your file in the time line, configure your favorite codec, and start conversion. Seeing the fact that XMPEG is tuned for maximum performance and quality, it may be a good solution to do the fastest as possible your batch conversions.
