What's your favorite screensaver?

I want to know what are some cool screensavers out there. I actually haven't used a screensaver in quite some time, and when I did some searching, I found out that the majority of screensavers out there are slideshows (cool but boring) or terrible animated graphics (we're talking Windows 3.1). What I would really like is a good looking rain or snow screensaver that doesn't look like it came from the stone age. Hopefully somebody here can point out some decent or innovative screensavers that they like, until then I'm stuck with my current one (a slideshow, of course :o).

True, true, I stopped using screensavers ever since I started encoding a couple of years ago. However, it's still nice to be able to use one, so what I started doing recently is leaving the screensaver off in the Windows display panel, and then making a shortcut on my desktop to whatever screensaver I'm currently using. That way, whenever I know I'm going to leave my pc and it's not doing anything important (like burning or encoding), I can just use the shortcut instead of having to depend on the time-bomb that Windows provides. But I suppose it's a good point, not many people here probably use screensavers, so I guess I'm out of luck.

It fakes a blue screen of death using actual system info from your pc, pretty funny (or not, depending on how it is used).

Hmmmmmm. My favorite screen saver has to be the ubiquitous "blank screen" screen saver. It is so mysterious. Is it a black bear in a dark cave or maybe it is the center of a black hole. All I can say for sure is that it is utterly dark and not very taxing on my system. I recommend it highly.

Honestly I tried all the pretty 3d screen savers. CPU usage did not put me off. It is just the fact that when they were running I was not there. So why should I care that they look pretty. Then there was also the fact that the most amasing screen savers I have ever seen were only 2d and avalible for Unix only.:devil:

Seriously, I see what you're saying about the pointlessness of screensavers in general, but they can still be fun. I remember back when I lived in a dorm I would leave extremely bizzare quotes as a scrolling text screensaver to confuse my roommates (who would slowly go mad until they finally would succumb and demand where the quote came from). I just think that most screensavers aren't very good, at least the free ones I found for download. Personally I think it would be great to have a nice, calming screensaver, like rain quietly falling on water, you could turn it on whenever you get frustrated. Maybe that's just me :).

i go even further, and let my monitor turn off after 15 mins of non-usage. truely black ;)

don't forget to turn the screensaver off before encoding though ;)

I had this great screenaver collection a few years ago, featuring the most bizarr things. There was about 20 Simpsons savers, maybe 30 Looney Tunes (Bugs and co) and about 30 other really fun things. Don't remember the name now, and the first version was made for Win3.11 I think. Didn't work under Win98, so I had to leave it when I got my previous computer.

My alltime favorite screensaver was back in the Win 3.1 days. Raindrops on the screen. The raindrops came one by one and ran down the screen leaving a trail of "water" on the screen contents one after another blurring after a while everything. It was like looking out of the window on a rainy day. If somebody knows of similar one that works for XP post it here!

its from the After Dark Totally Twisted pack (which includes flying toilets rather than flying toasters).

i dont have it installed on my main machine anymore, but i have it installed on a VMWare computer, which defeats the purpose, but is easy to grab screen shots from :)
