puzzled by the movie...the ring

i just watched the movie the ring last night. it had a good creepiness factor to it. during the movie, i called the home phone with my cell phone and scared the wife. :devil: didn't get any sex that night.

but for it being entertaining, it seemed like it left a lot of things unexplained for me. why did those persons who watched the movie die? why was rachel spared? what "powers" did samara have? what was rachel doing at the end of the movie that seemed like it was going to save her son's life?

so, if anyone has some explanations for me they would be greatly appreciatied.

She and her son were saved because they made a copy of the video and watched it. They were the only ones who did that; everyone else just watched the original, thus they died.

This movie subconciously encourages backing up your movies :D

well just wanted to add that i too loved the movie and am currently considering to buy the original japanese version on amazon.de. so does anybody know if the original ring movie (not the sequels) are as good as the american remake?

to get a little more on topic: i also do not know why people die after watching the movie but i think it's a damn good idea. I would love to see the movie again but can't as the dvd isn't out yet but it has dissapeared from the theaters entirely for a few weeks now :(

Personally i prefer the original version over the american. The scene where she comes out of the TV is much much better done in the japanese one (it creeped the hell out of me). The american version uses more "cheap effects" to scare people, it might be scarier, but not creepier (if you can make some sense out of that ;)).

But whatever you do don't watch the korean remake! LOL! The girl in the TV scene looks perfectly normal, just with a green face. No creepeness in the whole movie whatsoever. BTW. there are two japanese versions, the original and a japanes remake (i have no idea why anyone would do such a thing).

I've seen half the original jap version, but it was a vcd with HORRIBLE english subtitles and so I gave up on it. Unfortunately, I haven't seen the american remake yet so I can't compare and it would be unfair to without seeing the original with a decent presentation.

From what I saw I really didn't like it, but I have heard other people say that the original is much better than the remake. I'm not sure if that's true, or they are just being pretentious movie snobs (you know the kind of people who always like the original, even if it was shot with a camcorder in a dark basement with drama school rejects).

This will probably come out wrong ... but it also depends on what kind of movies you like. The american version was obivously trimmed for an american audience, while the japanese version was made for ... you get it :)

The american version is easily more entertaining.

I personally liked the original better, and what thop said was absolutely correct. The american version just tries for some shock factor and such, while the original is just genuinely scary.

I personally thought the japanese versions ALL three were not as good as the american remake

The american one has you on the edge of your seat while the japanese ones are just grusome but no spine tingling factor

well... France is the the only non-asian country where all of them were published, but they will be published in English for sure !
I've read them (since I'm French), and you really WON'T guess what will happen before you've read it. They really are great !

The original japanese Ring movie is one of my favorites. I overlooked the american version that a friend of mine had in DivX, it seemed to me like a cheap imitation :rolleyes:

The japanese version has a much darker environment and suspense.

I disagree. I have watched the Ring 1 and 2 Japanese version, all the various TV series and frankly the japanese one is way over exaggerated in actions and gestures as Japanese usually are.

The American version is better. More artistic like and definitely better in the special effects department.

I watched the remake first, and the japanese original months later, so i'm biased a little toward the american one. In that, the investigation was more complex and detailed, but the nature of the curse was not explained (which is a big mistake imo), so you must watch the original too, it you want to understand, what's going on.

/The last scene, where Sadako/Samara comes out from the tv, was definetaly more scarrier in the japanese version:)/

I wanted to watch the "original Ring", but MPC/WinDVD/PowerDVD weren't being very social on playing DVDs for free (I was at someone else's place). When I got home I figured out I could let MPC play DVDs with the WinDVD filters by using VMR rendering (I got a black screen before). :( Still want to see it some time.
