I've had a rash of temperamental DVD-R backups last couple of weeks. Turns out the problem was the labels I've started using. Acting on a suggestion from another forum on another website (AfterDawn?), as a test I removed the labels from 2 major problem discs -- a difficult, but do-able, process. The discs were scratched and messed up a bit in the process, but afterwards played perfectly. So there.
I understand that some settops handle labels better than others. This one is a Panasonic can't remember the model # offhand. To its credit, it handles scratched discs rather well, at least compared to my previous SONY piece of junk. It might be worth starting a list of players that can or can't handle labels. I thought they were cool -- especially for my kids, one of whom can't, and another of whom won't, read. The pictures helped. Oh well. Discs that play are better.
