problems with ntsc in europe?

sorry if this question has been awnsered before, but i just found nothing useful trough the search function.

i am at the moment in America and bought a bunch of dvd's. especially those used blockbuster dvd's (cheap). anyway, am i gone have problems with watching those dvd's on a code free dvd-player in europe, cause they are ntsc and not pal?

Alot of DVD can handle both PAL and NTSC content even if they are country locked. But if you bought a regeon free player it would be almost absurd for it not to support it. But not completely out of the question. I think the better question will be how is your display going to handle the NTSC signal. Newer TVs should be ok. But the older they get the worse your chances I think. Anyhow here in NTSC land I have sucessfully played PAL content. But perhaps we should wait for another PALer.

Yes, it depends on your tv if you can play them correctly. Almost all PAL tvs can handle NTSC though nowadays. Some TVs will only show black and white though.

Most DVD players have options how to display NTSC. They can send pure NTSC to your tv or PAL60 (might fix the black and white problem) or some even convert NTSC to pure PAL (which often looks like crap).

You should try all these options cause it might increase picture quality.

yes i can second that. my PAL dvd player plays both NTSC SVCD and DVD, but my TV set can only play it black and white. very annoying indeed. but i have hooked my DVD player to a friends TV set (a newer one) and it works like a charm with both DVD and SVCD.

If your TV and DVD have RGB connection (via SCART) you can try it - with apropriate cable. You will have color, and even sharper picture.

thanks for the tip. unfortunately my dvd player doesn't have a scart out. i'm currently using th svideo cable connected to a scart switch on my TV. anyway to get RGB without a scart out?

yes, i think i have a SCART connection on my tv. and since i have a newer tv, it wont be a problem with the color.

thanks for all your awnsers. i was just making sure, that i didn't spent all that money on dvd's which i can't watch anymore; or just in bad quality.
