View Full Version : having difficulty appending files in vdub

i've done a search for append, but found problems with fps of 23.976 etc.

i use avi io to cap to mjpeg (picvideo) and capturing one show works fine if i open all the files in vdub. the same for another capture. i edit the commercials out using direct stream copy to 1 large avi for each capture and then try to add the files together to 1 avi. problem is it wont let me. the frame rates are the same (25) and the sizes are the same (704x576).

i've opened both up seperatelly, and checked the file informations and everything matches. i've made sure they were on direct stream copy for both audio and video but i still get the error.

i've had to compress the files to divx and then add together.

i'm using version 1.4.13 btw, but tried the new one and had the same issue

anyone have any ideas on how to get the files to join?

Best to recompress if you have no other way of solving it, but you could try a direct stream too.

direct stream doesnt work. it wont load up the 2 caps together unless i recompress them first :(

The joining works - as long as the files were not captured with AVI_IO. If they were, Vdub gives the error message: "Cannot append segment. The video streams have different data format." Even when the two files are obtained by capture, end capture,capture... IOW, they should be identical in format. Very curious.

i use avi io to cap, and unlike in that thread, the frame rates are both exactly 25 fps

i tried again last night and may have found something.

if i edit the commercials out and direct stream copy the clips, then i end up with 2 video clips. prob is i cant add them. if i just add them all together without editing them then i can add them together.

i figure is this is something wrong with with picvideo mjpeg itself or virtualdub changes something in the video even tho direct stream copy is selected.

to try saving to a different codec altogther. if you're worried about quality, use HUFFY (a lossless codec and free to boot).

Save your edited captures to huffy (ex. cap1, cap2) and then append them.

I've had problems with MJPEG as well, but in using AVISYNTH for trimming commercials.

what os are you running by the by? what cpu?

i'm running (and have been running) AVI_IO
Dual 1ghz rig, PIII
WindowsXPsp1
ATI AIW Radeon
and I capture with HUFFY (and sometimes on my spare rig to MJPEG, but that's with Showshifter)

@tomos
Try to join the clips with AVIUtil.

ta for the replies guys.

valent: already tried that mate. didnt work for me.

shredness:

2800+ athlon
512 mb 2700 ddr
WindowsXPsp1
ATI AIW Radeon 8500 dv
that's the pc i compress etc with

i capture with

a 1900+ athlon
512 ddr 2100 ram
matrox g400 (great cap quality)
xp (no service pack)
and I capture with picvideo mjpeg

nothing but the drivers and power tools and avi io on that system.

i tested again and it is definetely the mjpeg codec causing issues after doing a direct stream copy. if i leave that out then i can add files. i have about 400 gigs of space so i can leave them undedited there till i add them together.

Open each segment in Vdub, pick DirectStreamCopy for audio and video, and set your interleaving values to reasonable settings. Now resave each segment. Then try appending the new copies.

This will hopefully force Vdub to rebuild the AVI container, but NOT rebuild the data streams.

i have never changed the interleave options. they have always been on 1 frame.

is there a reason why that should need to be changed?
