View Full Version : Watercooling of Dual Athlons

I'm about to put together a new system, most likely during the summer and I was considering the following setup:

Gigabyte GA-7DPXDW+ motherboard or possibly a TYAN Tiger MPX S2466N-4M
with
2x Athlon MP 2800+

An assortment of drives: 4-6HD's (depending on what I can/want to rescue from my old system and what price I can get for new ones), 3CD/DVD-R's

I'm not sure if the Gigabyte MB has digital audio out, and I know the TYAN doesn't have onboard audio at all, so I'll probably keep my old Soundblaster Live 5.1 as my audio.

Now for my questions:
One: I've been using the Matrox Marvel G-400 TV as my graphics adapter and I've been very satisfied with it so far. I do feel that it is a little outdated and was considering something new for my new computer. However, I'm not quite satisfied with the alternatives I've found so far either and I'd like some advice on what to choose. I have been looking a little at Matrox newer cards, but frankly - triplehead  - I don't need that. But there is one feature of the Matrox Marvel that I haven't found elsewhere, and that I'd like to have. The ability to both operate the TV out independently of the main monitor and use it as a secondary monitor when I'm not watching video. If anyone knows of another card that can do this, please tell me so.

Two: This is really my main question. Is there anyone out there who has experience of waterkooling dual Athlon MP systems? I'm looking into Koolance (http://www.koolance.com) products and their PC2-901BW tower would look very nice on my desk. ;) But so far most things I've read about watercooling deals with single CPU's, Tomshardware (http://www.tomshardware.com) did mention how to add the graphics adapter to the watercooling setup, and I've seen some who recommends adding the chipset to the watercooled parts. Koolance own FAQ mentions cooling duals as possible, but I still would like to hear someone with experience of the matter if possible.

Do you play (intensive 3D-) games?

No? Why even bother about graphics-card-cooling, then? There are reasonable GFX cards with passive cooling out there. And you can even make a high-end GFX (like ATI 9800 Pro) passive-cooled with the Zalman HP80 (or so), that is a passive cooling kit for 20 Euros.

No, I don't play much games - I'm a video freak, and you may be right about not watercooling the graphics card. It's just that from what I've read so far the extra effort of watercooling the GPU is close to 0 when you are installing a watercooled system anyway.

Oh, and I also found this forum (http://forums.overclockersclub.com/) where I got some healthy hints on how to watercool a system.
