Recommended Filter To Reduce Noise

Hi I am experimenting with XVID Encoding From DVD and Every DVD I Try seems to have unbearable amounts of noise. What would you recommend as a filter to eliminate this noise?

What does the "noise" look like? It's best to post a screenshot, but if you can't, then please at least describe it. Is it for example a general graininess? Square blocks? Itchy stuff around sharp edges? Is it present only after you encode to Xvid or is it there before? [etc.]
