--- UPDATE ---
The problem below seems to be fixed. Another uninstall problem on the Pinnacle forums pointed me to some leftover folders in Program Files. Deleting those, as well as some other leftover junk I can't recall offhand, seems to have done the trick. As far as I can tell, everything seems back in working order. Oh well. There went 6 hours of troubleshooting. Beats me why that might have caused this problem.
--------------

My software players suddenly quit working, and I need help. System details are below. This morning, I had WORKING FINE on my machine PowerDVD, WinDVD, Windows Media Player, and the DVD player in IFO edit. I've been evaluating several editing suites, including ULEAD Video Studio, Pinnacle Studio 8, and DVDlab. I decided to stick with ULEAD, and this morning uninstalled the other two. That's when the trouble started. After that, none of the software players worked, either from disc or from the HD. I've deinstalled all of them, upgraded to DirectX 9 and Windows Media 9, and reinstalled WinDVD and PowerDVD. At this point, the player in IFOedit works, and WMP 9 now will play DVD's. WinDVD hangs immediately with a C++ runtime error, as it has since the problem started. PowerDVD hangs badly on any play attempt, such that a Task Manager shutdown is necessary, as it has since the problem started.

I suspect a driver or an mpeg decoder problem, but have no clue where to go from here. I would be very grateful for ANY suggestions. THANKS.

Apologies if this is the wrong forum. If someone could steer me to the right one, great.
