DivX to avi editable in Premiere

I did spent 3 hrs on searching but didn't find straight answer.
I want to edit DivX movie in Premiere 6 but I can't. The tiny preview window will play the file but once I place it on timeline, Premiere monitor is black and program becomes sluggish.
I found my way around: I made DVD out of that DivX movie with MyDVD on HD, than used dvd2avi, and the outcome avi file was perfectly editable in Premiere. The problem is this method is very time consuming.
Anybody can teach me easier way?

I don't know much Premiere,
but it sounds like you were missing the vfw codec
for decoding the correct divx version.
This can be confirmed if you are not able to open the file
with virtualDub.
In this case, just install the corresponding codec,
divx3.11 alpha for div3 fourCC
divx5.X for divx5
xvid for xvid...

If your problem is not coming from an xvid issue,
try to use avisynth to serve your avi file to premiere.
(Check the avisynth forum for that.)

Using a dvdEncode and dvd2avi is not really the good solution,
since you encode to mpeg2 then or you reencode to an avi, or you must use another way to frameserve the mpeg2 to premiere ( unless it supports it directly which i doubt).

Premiere is a buggy software that does not work with divx files half the time. Your best bet is to convert the file to a codec such as huffyuv.

I agree. My opinion is Premiere thinks too much :)
As I mentioned in my first post, I went around burning Internet downloaded AVIs into HD with Sonic My DVD and then using DVD2AVI I was able to make Premiere work with those files. I wish Premiere had brains of Sonic My DVD and took on everything that moves :)

My problem is I frequently meet downloaded files with audio out of sync. What other program can help me with that?
