View Full Version : "real" CD sizes for D2S
First of all congratulations to you all. This site is my home page since ripping DVDs has become my hobby.
Trying to fit as much video I can in my CDs, I have found that, according to a very comprehensive CD FAQ (http://www.cdrfaq.org/faq07.html#S7-6), the real CD sizes are:
74 min -> 746MB
80 min -> 807MB
99 min -> 999MB
However, CD sizes provided by D2S in the default settings are smaller than these real sizes, i.e. 740 and 800, respectively. So, it seems that we would be "wasting" at least 7 MB on each 74 and 80 min CD.
I have tried 999 as D2S CD size for 99 min CDs sucsessfully.
Would it be safe to just increase those default sizes on the bitrate tab?
It is just 1%, but perhaps 20 Kbps more available bitrate!
Best regards,

As far as I know, that 1% is safety padding, in case the output filesize ends up being slightly larger than intended. Overburning can only do so much.
Yes, I thought of that also. But if that was the case, why burning a 999 CD worked? Shouldn't I have placed 990, to allow for the 1% padding?
Another possible explanation is that "740" and "800" are not considered MB by D2S, but as Minutes*10, and then D2S does the apropriate calculation considering that.
Well, I will just try and see.

If you rip your DVD, and specify 800, you will see the final BIN file of the size of 823,xxx KB. This is already filled to the brim. If you load this Bin file in CDRWin, you will see that the is filled to 79:59:50~55 Which is the most you can burn on any disc. If you try to burn complete 80:00:00 most probably your burner will not burn and if it does, it will not be able to close the CD Session.

Hi all,
As you can see in http://www.disctronics.co.uk/technology/cd-rom/cdrom_spec.htm
User data in Mode 2 form 2 is 2324 bytes/sector, instead of 2352
which are the total bytes per sector, so, assuming the number of sectors, the available spaces are:
74 min=333.000 sectors= 738.04 MB
80 min=360.000 sectors= 797,88 MB
(I am unsure about the accuracy of number of sectors per CD, may be they depends on the brand...).
D2S uses a very simple, but accurated calculation. It simply discounts 5 MB in the written number,(as you can see in bbmpeg cutting point).
The maximum mpeg size also depends if you are authoring only one track, including or not additional files in EXTRA folder, Title and change CD picture, and so no. In my case I usually include only one still (Change CD), and I've tried writting 801 MB and the resulting image fits in my 80 min CDs, but 802 MB not (without overburn).
Also, you can see the number of used sectors (and the equivalent minutes) in VCXBuilder_log.txt
Cheers
I did the test. Cristal clear now.
A small posting just to let you know the results. I checked de VCXBuilder_log and the built CD would absolutely not fit.
Thank you all, particularly jsoto for pointing this out.
Regards,
r6d2
