can anyone tell me how to connect the three audio connectors on my motherboard, 5.1 analogue out, to my hifi's 5.1 RCA input.

Do i need to use a stereo 3.5mm plug to 2x RCA for each of the the three connectors?

What is the make and model of your amp?
Those analogue outputs were meant for connecting to a set of 5.1 PC speakers not and hi-fi amp.
If you have 5.1 sound card then you should have some kind of spdif
adapter with which to output the digital signal as well. And your
hifi 5.1 amp should have a digital/AC3 input option.
This would be the ideal setup to use. There is an excellent AC3 setup
forum/guide on this site.
The best you'll get using your sound card otherwise is to use the
analogue main speaker out with a stereo 3.5mm plug to 2x RCA and
connect that to a stereo input on your amp such as VCR1/2 input.
Then use AC3Filter and set playback to stereo or dolby surround to
get pro-logic playback via your amp.

Yes you need stereo 3.5 plug to 2xRCa totaling of 3 kables that you connect to the correct analouge inputs on your amplifier. Alos make sure to read your mobo manaul to se if its really 5.1 analouge out and not mic in/line in/digital 5.1 out or stereo analouge out. Outputing in analouge is better as it supports all types of 5.1 formats(AAC,vorbis,ac3,dts,wave 5.1,aiff 5.1,dvd audio and so on) and cant really say the quality is bad so why not use analouge.

Only other way to get digital output in all formats is to use a nforce2 mobo that encodes all to ac3 first. But the extra encoding doesnt sound so pleasent to me.
