View Full Version : DVD Shrink compression rate?

I ripped a DVD with DVDShrink and the film was too big to fit on one DVD-R so I compressed it.
Now my question:
How far can I compress a film so that it still has acceptable/good quality? (20%/40%)?

Filmfan:

It might be fun to grab a handful of re-writeable discs and do some testing. In the end, the compression ratio/s that you settle on will be a matter of personal choice. I, for one, would certainly be interested in the ratios you test with, and your opinion of the resulting image quality. Have fun!

@Filmfan: Since you understand german, you should really read the gorgeous test-articles mb1 wrote about DVD2One and Instantcopy.

Here are the links:

http://www.videoxone.net/mb1/dvd2one/dvd2one.htm

http://www.videoxone.net/mb1/instantcopy7/instant.htm

In his articles, he suggests 20-25% reduction for good quality for DVD2One, and 30% for IC7, of course depending on the movie (and note that there are updates available, so this ratio may have improved)...
But since beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder, you should really do what ammck55 suggests...

@ultimatebilly:

Indeed, these tests are beautifully done! Could someone post a link to translation software that would allow me to better understand the work that mb1 has done here? A demonstration of my German speaking skills would be grounds for a strike, I fear.:D

here is a webservice that translates from and to various languages. pretty straigth forward. it can translate whole webpages too, just copy and paste the url and select the languages!

http://babelfish.altavista.com/tr

don't expect miracles though... it's just a computer that's doing the translation. but it gives you a pretty decent idea of what the webpage is talking about!
