View Full Version : Another stupid DVD-R capacity question

I'm sorry, but I'm apparently still confused  about capacity--as my new coaster will attest (the first in quite a while:angry: ). I have a fileset that Windows says is
___ "4.25 GB (4,567,516, 823 bytes)
I burned it to an img (imgtool), and that file is
___ "size: 4.25GB (4,568,008,704 bytes)" AND
___ "size on disk: 4.25GB (4,568,010,752 bytes)"
QUESTION: Is this, or is it not, over the "4.37gb" capacity of a DVD-R?

In IFOedit, I usually do a quick test with the Disc Image button, and this fileset cleared the test (never does create an image, because I haven't solved the "can't find imglib.dll" problem). RecordNow Max burned the disc, and then went wierd, and the disc/COASTER is full but unreadable.

QUESTION 2: Isn't some quick, definitive go/no-go test or calculator out there somewhere?

THANKYOU

UPDATE: I did another test burn with RNM, and noticed the size bar at the bottom. This .img seems within the limit, and the burn seems to have gone off. I can't test it til later, though. Hmmmmm.

this is from my limited testing
Blank DVD-R 4,489MB 4,706,074,624 bytes or 4.383GB
Blank DVD+R 4,483MB 4,700,372,992 bytes or 4.377GB

U have an undersized by 130mb image.

The problem with it lays elsewhere. Perhaps u didn't 'Get VTS Sectors' or haven't Ifoupdated it at all.

Can't really recommend anything, till there r some more clues to work on.

Thanks for the responses. mrbass, the specific numbers are helpful. The indicators I have available, and my best assessment, are that this fileset is about 100mb under the limit--i.e., very close. I rechecked the fileset, and found no problems. The next test burn (-RW) came out fine, so I don't know what went wrong. The burn was at 2x (Ritek G03), and the test was at 1x. Maybe when it's that close to the limit, speed matters. [update] I just did another burn with dvd-r, 1x, and it went fine. Go figure.

No, speed doesn't matter at all whether at start or near end. I am squeezing every bit out of my backups leaving less than 10mb free space and I am burning at 2x all the time, on 2x discs.

I had a few coasters lying around my desk but I am to blame for them.

Im always starting from a just restarted system prior to burning and I never burn from a hybernated one. Well the few times that I don't, I am enriching my coaster collection.

Of course the individual disk quality at the outer ring is a significant factor as well.

Amen to that. Always check the disc you are about to burn and if there are any scratches near the edge, reserve this disc for smaller filesets, like 3.9GB. I got a verbatim spindle where several discs had scratches and imperfections near the outer ring. How the hell did this happen? As you can gather, I am pissed about this. It's the last time I'll buy blanks by mail order, especially when it is just as cheap to buy at a brick & mortar store like Best Buy, where you can return junk in 30 days.

Thanks for the tips. Oddyseus, since your post I've begun burning at 2x (I was paranoid, I guess), with no problems at all. I'm also checking discs for scratches prior to burning, but haven't noticed any yet. I've had other problems, but those are turning out to be label related (see here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=54831)).
