Wing Commander 4 (game) dvd problem

Few days ago I was lucky to get this game on a double-sided dvd. Quality of the movies is great in comparison to the old 6 cd version (320x160 @ 13 fps).
My problem is - I can watch those files (vobs) only on software dvd players like WinDVD or PowerDVD, even BSplayer; but I'm getting message "file not found" (concerning a vob file) when playing the actual game. As far as I know this edition was bundled with a Creative DXR2 card few years ago and I assume it uses a hardware decoder (at least these assumptions from "http://www.crius.net/zone/index.php" - wcnews forum - seem reasonable), so taht's what causes the problem.
Is there any way to bypass hardware decoder with a combination of decoders/filters from WinDVD, PowerDVD or whatever to make it work?
Some guys said they succeeded partially by editing system.ini and win.ini. In my case - still no luck.
