I've got a short segment that is black line art on a white background. (If ya wanna know, it's the Hirschfield characature from the Bob Hope special.) There is some color artifacting around curves of the original. How can I remove those and keep just the B&W portion?

Well, that's not entirely correct. I want to get rid of any color that's NOT, essentially black, and replace all "blacks" with pure black.

Actually, a filter that would make a guess of the source type (either color or B&W) and turn chroma on or off would be great. The file I'm working with has a LOT of interspersed B&W segments.

Does such a thing exist?

Something like Coring (-> turn everything over a certain threshold black) should be able to help you I think.

For mixed color/b&w content you'll have to use Avisynth with the Trim command I'm afraid, no filter exists (yet) that can determine what type of content you have. You can also use Avisynth's Levels filter to substitute VDub's Coring filter.

I think what you mean is called detail rainbowing. Try Smart Smoother IQ (not to be confused with Smart Smoother HiQ).
