As everyone knows, NTSC SVCD is 480x480 and PAL SVCD is 480x576.
Duraing playback it gets resized horizontaly to archieve the correct aspect ratio. Its mostly 4:3, and therefore the resulting size is 480 x 4/3, with is exactly 640 pixels.
Good.
But what for the damn PAL 576 lines? Multiplied by 1.333 (4/3) its 768 pixels, what sounds awfull big for me!
Please advice what size to select, as i need to be sure before recompressing the movie to Xvid... :mad:

Hi trodas,
As you say, MPEG has a DAR (Display Aspect Ratio) indication, but, AFAIK, avi coded files (Xvid, DivX) not. I do not know the MPEG-4 standard (sure it have it too), but seems you are trying to generate an avi.
Well. you have three choices:
- Yes, use 768 pixels in horizontal
- Use the same resolution than NTSC: 640x480. In this case you will lose some quality in vertical. In fact, you can use any value you want, keeping 4:3 ratio.
- Use the original resolution 480x576 (do not resize) during coding. Most of the avi players allow you to manually select the DAR during playback. If nothing is selected, then "square pixels" will be used, that means a 1:1 DAR, and you will see an anamorphic movie.

Well, i hear that maximum the vertical size (TV limitation) is 720 pixels, so, i convert the movie into NanDub with first croping to 480x336 pixels (active screen size) and then enlarge it (lancoz) to 720x336.
It looks still that the vertical resolution could be bigger, but its source (Martix Reloaded screened 3CD version) are made from the front of cinema hall, so, its obivously a bit distorted anyway... :rolleyes:
But the 720should be the proper X size in pixels during playback. I dont trust much the DAR settings into videoplayers... tought.
