Taking apart the dvd, then re-encoding, then putting it back together isn't the way!

All these great tools we have are all for one thing, taking apart the dvd, then putting it back together. However it will take many years before this is perfected and may never even be perfected!!!

I Know shag all, but why isn't it possible to re-encode the video while still keeping the Vobs in one piece??? Just like what instant copy does except using CCE instead???

Taking apart the dvd is definetly not the way to go! It takes too much time plus no autmated program will possibley be ever perfected to do the process!!! Why can't the video just be passed though the CCE encoder and vob file re-built????

Please explain to me why not because this hjas always been at me!

This is impossible because reencoding a VOB on the fly like the Transcoders do requires that CCE maintains the original GOP structure. There is currently no way to force CCE or any other encoder to use a predefined GOP structure througout the entire stream.

So simply put if we were able to tell CCE to use a I frame on the 290th frame and a b-frame on the 300th etc.. then this would be possible???

What you are describing is what I think dvdshrink does. Level 1 is compress B frames only. Level 2 is compress B frames only, but apply even more compression. Level 3 is compress P frames only, ....

You probably would not want to tell CCE to use the same structure. However I think you can tell CCE which frames to make into I-Frames for the purpose of chaptering. I guess that if I-frames are the only thing that need to be preserved as far as the overall DVD is concerned, you could do what you were talking about by detecting the many thousands of iframes and feeding that into your CCE.

I think it should be forgotten about,

Reauthorist and the like have an almost perfect soloution to the problem.

I say almost as they still have time against them as there is too much 'stuff' to be done when re-authoring a dvd. But this is becomming less and less and maybe by christmas 03 we will have the perfect back-up tool.
