How to replace a VOB-ID with a blank

How can I replace a specific VOB-ID in a title-set with a blank? I'm still a newbie with all of this, but slowly I'm getting there. I'm now busy with trying to keep the menu, with(out) some/all of the extras and still have a working dvd. To do that I want to keep the complete structure of a dvd, just by replacing vob-idz with a blank. A vobset with a single PCG is no problem, but one with multiple PCGz is.

Okay here is what I want to do. I have a title-set with multiple PCGz, each PCG contains multiple VOB-IDz. I'm going to strip all the audio, subs and almost all VOD-IDz. I think it's best to keep one VOB-ID in each PCG. Okay, now we're at the part I don't understand at this moment. I want to replace all of those last VOB-IDz by just 1 blank! So after that each PCG will contain the same blank VOB-ID.

The question is: How!

I don't think you can do that. VobID is an essential part of the DVD title set structure. The best you could do would probably be make all VOB IDs the same but that would probably mean re-authoring the whole thing.

I've noticed that in a DVD9 the VobID usually changes across the layer
break between the first and second layers of the DVD. Plays hell with
subtitle streams extracted with VOBEDIT ...

Actually it is, check out these guides (http://www.deano.dsl.pipex.com/backup/prepare.htm).

I would like to use something like guide nr. 7, but there is just one problem. The guide says: "This can method can used on just one PGC or removing more but leaving at least one original VOB ID intact in one PGC". I want to strip all VOB-IDs and remux only one (0.12 sec) blank. This blank will be assigned as VOB_ID 1 and put in every PCG of that vob-set. You will have a complete working dvd, no doubt! Every button in your menu will also work, if you click a stripped extra or something you will see a flash (0,12 sec) of a black screen and then return to your menu.

If have already tried it on vob-sets with a single PCG and it works just fine. So will it with multiple PCGz, I'm too much of a newbie too figure this out myself. :scared:

Here's what I do...
(Disclaimer, I'm still a newbie, so this might not be the best, but it works for me!)
Suppose this type of structure, roughly:

PGC_1
VobID 1/1 time
VobId 2/1 time

PGC_2
VobID 3/1 time

PGC_3
VobID 4/1 time

One of these VobID's usually has a time code of 0.12, 0.15, 0.18 sec and usually a blank screen when you preview it. Make a note of it. Let's select VobID 3 as the blank screen.

In the top window of IFOedit, click on VTS_PGCITI,
then click on PGC_1, scroll down to the bottom of the code where it lists the VobID associated with the respective Cell, double click on the VobID for Cell 1, and enter 3

Repeat the same thing for PGC_3,
click on PGC_3, scroll down to the bottom of the code where it lists the VobID associated with the respective Cell, double click on the VobID for Cell 1, and enter 3

Now you should have this type of structure, roughly:

PGC_1
VobID 3/1 time
VobId 2/1 time

PGC_2
VobID 3/1 time

PGC_3
VobID 3/1 time

NOTE: IFOedit automatically fixes the stats associated with the VobID!
I figured this out after wasting time and brain cells editting playtimes and sector starts, etc.
Way to go Derrow!

Click on Vob Extras at the bottom of IFOedit, and uncheck Strip Streams (audio and captions only), check STRIP VobID's, hit OK
Check VobID 3 to Keep it, the rest will be stripped, then Strip it.

Your final IFO should have this type of structure, roughly:

PGC_1
VobID 1/1 time

PGC_2
VobID 1/1 time

PGC_3
VobID 1/1 time

In effect, you set all the PGC's to have only one common VobID, an original VobID with the smallest size possible. The other VobID's are Stripped and deleted.

This is the way I do it also, but what if none the pcgz have a blank in them? Then you have to remux one somehow. But how.....?

Are you mainly concerned with saving space?

If you want to delete all of the VobID's from a VTS_x_1.VOB, then it appears you should just bypass the VOB altogether from the Menu of whatever IFO is executing it.

If the VOB is bypassed, then it can be deleted.

To bypass a VOB is to much work for me, keepin all PCGz, each with 1 blank VOB-ID is much faster. It is also a safe way of stripping. This way you will keep your complete dvd-structure and your dvd has 0 chance to crash. I use the way you alreay have mentioned above if the title-set already has one blank.

I just don't know what to do if I have a set without any blanks.

Help is comming! :)
Next release of MenuEdit will be able to help you with this. Among other things it will be possible to replace any cell in the vob file with another cell (which could be blank). Then with couple mouse clicks IfoEdit will correct corresponding ifo files. And you are all set.

It will be released as soon as testers are done with it. Hope sometime next week.
