Hi there

I got pretty easy guestion for veteran Virtual dub users :)

I have couple movies which have dull parts in it (read porn) and would like to edit em a bit.

Now I got latest gordian knot installed so thought the modded virtualdub version would do the trick.

The first trouble is when I open any allrdy compressed movie file I get this warning "VBR audio stream detected, etc etc do you want rewrite the header" so ok I do this.

Then I open the second cd and do the same .. Now I have two smaller files in hand and when I try to join em in virtual dub it says "cannot append segments the files have different sample rates" .

Am I doing something wrong?

The first error made me wonder is this basic thing that pops up the "VBR audio stream detected" thing? Since I just packed one movie with GK and it too pops up the very same warning..

Thanks in advance :)

Update:

Well tryed the same with Nandub and it didint give anykinda warnings and the editing was easy. Is my conclusion wrong if I say that Modded virtualdub with GK is only for Gordian knots use?

hi,
that nandub isn't popping up any errors doesn't mean that it treats the audio differently (:
the modded vdubmod version should work at least as good doing this... i have no idea why it popped up the error when appending the segments and nandub didn't.

well perhaps you should try without rewriting the headers... sometimes these files get async though so always carefully check befor you are burning a movie!

so no the modded vdubmod version should be working fine. i haven't used it yet though!

So does that error popping mean that the video and audio isnt in sync??

Or what does exactly that error mean? :/

the problem is that with the original avi specs the existence of vbr mp3 wasn't considered. so muxing a vbr mp3 into your movie, you are actually using a hacked version. now when loading those files into vdubmod, it sees that there is something wrong with your file header - that the 'description' of the audio stream and the actual stream do not fully fit together.
if you just mux the two files (divx/xvid) and vbr mp3 it will most likely be in sync, but if you for example decide to split this file later, it could easily happen that you end up with an async avi. most of the time it helps if you just demux the file and remux it while splitting/editing.

drom my personal experience this doesn't happen when you use avimuxgui. don't ask me why (:

hope this helps!

Yes I was wondering this since all my GK xvid/divx packed movies seem to be in sync atleast I cannot tell if they are async.

Iam bit out about these slang saying like mux and demuxing..

Muxing mean you kinda attach mp3 stream to the video?

if you have the nerves left this is how I should do it.

I separate the video and audio stream. edit the video and then cut the audio. After this is doned I mux (put em back together) and I should have working avi? :)

I tryed again and and answered No into the error in vdub mod (the header thing) and it worked.

I just tryed putting small pieced together i didint yet try to edit 2cd movie to one 1cd movie. But if I understanded correctly , if I dont separate the audio & video and edit em separately I might get out of sync movie?

hey,
mux and demux are the short forms for multiplex and demultiplex. and as you've already said this means 'putting' audio and video together into one avi/ogm/mkv or 'cutting'out the audio and saving it to a seperate file.
if you are unclear about other terms, here's the link to doom9's glossary (http://www.doom9.org/glossary.htm)

ok you kinda confused me there :) did you accomplish the task you were trying to do or not?

oh and i didn't mean you edit audio and video seperately but just demux them and then remux them (i'd do it with avimuxgui - other's might disagree :D) then append them. this way you should be able to get a big avi file with audio in sync and a proper header.

i hope this time it's clear (:

you might want to check out Matroska, a new container (=like .avi). it will definitely not give you such problems but on the other hand it is still in a rather early stage, so it's constantly being deveolped and not fully functional yet. it can keep up with the .avi container in most aspects though! checkout the 'New Audio/ Video codecs forum' or www.matroska.org if you are interested!
