TMPGenc General Questions

Hello All,

I am new here although I have been reading quite a bit on the forums to try and get my questions answered. I would just like to see if I can get a few things clarified...

1.) I keep reading about 2 pass converting with TMPGenc. Can someone help me out a little here. What are the advantages and where is that setting?? Is the default setting single pass?

2.) I have 1 file that continously crashes TMPGenc. It is the 1st file of two XVID AVIs. The 2nd converts fine, the 1st crashes TMPGenc everytime (about a minute into the source position). I am assuming that it is somehow corrupt and I would like to fix the file so that TMPGenc will read it. Some advice here?

3.) I do not understand how aspect ratios are modified or even applied with TMPGenc. I have a movie that is full screen and I would like it to be converted to wide screen. How do I go about doing that??

Please go easy on me, I know that some of you are probably going to be frustrated by these questions but I have searched the forums quite a bit and eliminated other questions that I had. I've been a little confused by some of the conflicting responses that I have read. I am a moderator for a sportbike forum and I know what it's like everytime someone asks me how to pull a wheelie or change there brakes but 99% of the time, I will still help them out. We were all newbies at some point.

When you use 2-pass the quality won't be better, because the compression will be always the same! But in 2-pass the encoder will see where to use higher bitrates and where lower bitrates. So it uses the right bitrate at the right position (where it is needed). When using 2-pass there will be left more discspace to get a higher bitrate. Think about it : If you use constant bitrate (lets say 1200 bps) then the whole videosource will be encoded at the bitrate, then you will get, every time you encode it, the same filesize. When using 2-pass, the encoder can predict where to use the right bitrate, and then you get a full i.e. CD-R - therefore the bitrate will be higher = better quality.

But: CQ came out as the winner in quality, but the problem is that you have to calculate the right factor use the whole discspace of your CD-R. And the second advantage is the less encoding time! So just test with the CQ factor or use a mathematical formula.

[...]If the files you are trying to encode are downloaded from the web there might be some errors in the file, and using 2pass will sometimes make it impossible for TMPGEnc to encode if such errors are present.

But the fact, that TMPGEnc doesn't support DivX/XViD/etc. makes it harder to repair the file. But if you encode in CQ you'll nearly never get any read/write errors!

For that failure you have just to some tools.

For this you have to go to "MPG Setting --> Advanced --> Video arrange mode". When using "Full Screen (keep aspect ratio)" you will get the original heights and widths. When using "custom size" you will be able to enter your own heights and widths. Just test it, but don't forget that the heights and widths have to be dividable by 8 or 16!

I think you are lazy ! :D It is no feat to find divfix ;)
