I ripped a dvd film to the hard drive using smart ripper.
The original was small enough to fit onto a dvdr so i thought I'll just fire up Nero select new dvd film and drop all the files smartripper produced into the video_ts folder on the nero template thingy.
So then nero says "hold on some files are missing, this might not play back a dvd player" and the files that are missing are: video_ts.ifo and video_ts.bup and vts_07_0.bup.

I understand the bup files are just backups of the ifo but do i need video_ts.ifo or will the disk work with the VTS_07_0.IFO that IS there?

how come smartripper removed it if nero says u need it? in the past i've tried ignoring the message and yep - it didnt play on a dvd player but was ok on pc.
-------------------------------
This morning I used dvd2one to squish up a bigger set of vobs that i had ripped using smartripper and it worked like a charm! it put that missing ifo back. i think. nero didnt complain anyway - havent tried it in a dvd player yet.

any hints folks?

hey and welcome to the forum,
if you have a DVD that is small enough to fit onto a DVD-R (thus smaller than 4.7gig) you can use dvddecrypter to rip in iso mode. this creates a 1:1 copy of the DVD content on your hard drive. afterwards you can again use DVDdecrypter or Nero to burn the iso file to a dvd-r

here's the guide: http://www.doom9.org/mpg/dvd5-backup.htm
