View Full Version : The Joule Of My Collection.txt

The most buitiful joule of my collection has to be Nikita. Apart from
being a very good film that has a female assasin, the technical aspects
of this particular encode are very nearly supreme.

The encode was done using DivX 5.05 using 3 passes overnight. The log file
was manualy tweaked just to give an extra couple of bits to action scenes.
The avi container includes this one buitiful quality video track and 5 audio AC3
tracks for different languages. In the Subtitles folder there are 2
files that hold the subtitles for the movie .idx and .sub. There are 21
subtitles of different languages including English-normal and English-for
hearing impaired. The avi is split into 2 files of almost equal size
that are just under 700MB and with the subtitles (that are also split
into 2) they add up to a 700MB CD with just enough space for any loaders.
If you look at the edges of some of the particularly difficult scenes you
can see alittle bit of messiness however i tend to watch my movies with
alittle bit of DivX's film effect noise which makes the movie (which was not
of the best quality on the DVD) look like it's the latest holliwood movie.

Having 5 AC3 sound tracks means that 5 AC3 filters have to be loaded for the
movie so the video is alittle bit memory intensive. Still - mplayer2 only
takes 40-50MB of RAM.

Having VobSub load automatically and display an icon in the task bar i can
just right click on that icon and select which audio to play and which
subtitles to display. Obviously since the video is on 2 cds it is hardly
perfect (the audio along takes about 650MB) but it can easily be joined
back when i get a dvd burner.

have you got any joules?

Sorry for this: I think that it's complete nonsense what you make, unless you want to sell it on International Market :D

5 audio and 21 subtitle in AVI - I wouldn't call it Joule, but overload.

What you make is too much and nonsense even for DVD backup.

I fart in your general direction.

But seriously. 5 AC3 audio streams? Even if they are all stereo or even mono this leaves so little room for video it would look like poo.

I think what he's trying to say is that he has a 5ch AC3 audio?

well what he said is that he has 5 different ac3 channels for different languages... rather sounds to me like 5 ac3 files... or did he somehow mix 5 different languages into 1 ac3 file, one for each channel. i guess this would really sound funny :-P

i know what he said, but with 5 AC3 tracks, even if they're 2ch yer only gonna get maybe 400MB for video!

@ppera2 and CaPPyD
I think there's lots of ways to tell someone nicely that what he's doing doesn't make very much sense. Farting in his direction and calling his work "complete nonsense" is not one of them, at least it isn't in my opinion.
dimitrius has obviously put lots of work into this very first thread of his. Hitting 1696 keys (plus title, btw why the ".txt"? Get a flatrate!;)) while not mastering the English language (not an insult, i don't either...) perfectly just to give us guys a chance to show off with our favourite encodes (how selfless) is something that should probably be recognized by us.
I still agree with you though, 5 tracks might be a tiny bit "overloaded" for private use. But who knows, maybe he's got lots of international friendships or enjoys serving other people through Kazaa because they're having a hard time finding movies in their own language. Who knows?

Dear crOOk:

Serving people with movie copies via Kazaa is not theme for this forum. Copyright stays for audio tracks too.

Btw. I ripped from couple DVD 2 audio tracks, but I store additional audio in separated file, and load it by playback. Don't see reason to make AVI with 2 audio tracks.

well i see a lot of use in putting 2 audio tracks into the avi... why leave them outside? just because you'll spear a meg or 2 of overhead?

no i find it convenient to be able to switch between english and german on my rips... even in the middle of the movie, withour having to load an extra audio track!

oh and @crook: please remember rule 6 (:

@dimitrus: just wondering: did you store the audio files seperately or did you mux them all into your avi?!? also what bitrate and how many channels did you use for each language. furtermore, i can tell you i've seen a lot of 1st posts in the noob forum and i can tell you this one is far better than the average one... don't mind any mistakes, this is not of any importance!
oh and how many cds did you have to use for the final burn? or did you burn it to dvd-r?

Please don't take this as a shameless plug, because it is not.

@dimitrius: You may want to take a look at Matroska. (http://www.matroska.org) It was designed to shine in these types of situations. It is a replacement container for AVI. It can handle an unlimited number of audio/video/subtitle tracks. This means that you won't need to have any seperate subtitle files, but can just choose the subtitle that you want at playback.

The DirectShow filter is still maturing so not all of the features are available, but it sounds like once the filter is stable, this would be the container for you.

More information is available from the New A/V Formats (http://forum.doom9.org/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=54) forum.

wow, not quite the responce i anticipated...

there 5 separate ac3 streams. Nikita is an old movie - before the days of 5.1 so when they released it on dvd they basically put stereo sound into ac3 streams. i could have put it into mp3 streams but the ac3 stream allows many cool options which i probably would never use (and in fact i only have 2 little speakers) but i like having my options open. these 5 ac3 streams take up just under 700meg and the whole movie is split into 2 cds so the video stream takes up about 650meg which leaves some space on cds for the subtitles. the subtitles are in separate files (in fact 4 - 2 for each cd [.idx and .sub]).

thank you for suggesting the Matroska container - definetly will check it out.

the reasons why i put so much into this one movie are:

1. just like killingspree i like being able to switch between languages only in my case it's english and russian (and soon french wich is the original language of the movie [so it is not dubed])

2. Nikita is an old movie that became a cult classic and spawned a remake - Assasin - also an excellent movie. Basically it's a collector's kind of thing. The reason why i didn't just made a dvd backup is because i don't like dvd menus - i prefer to just put the cd in and play the movie. Also - 2cds = 1.4GB is still less than a dvd.

although the movie is split into 2 cds - that's just temporary. When i buy a dvd burner i will join the 2 files.

i quite like this encode because it makes a very good collector's item - all the different soundtracks and tons of subtitles. i don't remember the exact figures i used during encoding but it's 1.5 hour movie that takes up about 650MB using B-frames (the movie has alot of dark places - thought it would be a good idea). Finally i muxed it with AVImux_GUI.

if that's not a good encode have you made any better ones?

EDIT:
oh yeah - the .txt in the title is because i typed the message at home and saved to text file then went to Uni and posted it.

just out of curiosity: could you post a screenshot of the movie. preferably from a rather hard to encode scene with a lot of movement for example...
would be great!

furthermore: you said you had 5 audio tracks: so you got russian, english, french - and? two different comentarys? oh and did you recompress the ac3 audio or did you use the original files?

dimitrius:

I think that you gave bad name for this thread - therefore such reaction from me. You have of course right to make your backups in way how you think it's best. But calling it Joule, supreme, looking as last Hollywood movie etc. is very bad approach, especially for first post here.
You should mention more details about video - resolution, average bitrate, for example.

Finally, because you asked is it good encode : it's simple, beginner encoding, what is OK for most cases, but not with so much audio tracks. And yes, I made many better ones :D

"Better" is pretty subjective, especially when the goals are different.

I am confused, do ya'll mean "Jewel" or "Joule"?

waldok

Same question as Pamel here, plus one : what is "Joule" ?

sorry but i really wonder about the level of post in this forum since quite some time..

this is his first post and all he has to tell people is what a hell of a ripper he is?!? using divx5. [evil grin..]

imagine this forum full of such posts and it wouldn't be the place it used to. sorry for harsh words but that thread couldn't have possibly brought me nowhere..

Man whats with you people!?

I have to agree with crook. Is this really a good way way to answer a firs time poster? Swaerin a farting etc..
Ok, his post didnt hold much usefull information, but he did post in General disussion. As a first time poster wouldnt it be better to nicley point out to him what he did wrong and nicley tell him what reading he should do before posting again.
I mean, we want to get new members, dont we? If we scare new members away by barking swearin and farting, how is this forum supposed to live on?
New members learn to be good at ripping and encoding etc., share thier knowledge, replacing moderators as they get burn. Isnt this the way it supposed to be? Right me if im wrong.

Cheers

@desen,

one can surely see things this way and personally i can understand such point of view. on the other hand it is a hard world, right?

before i post something i think very well about it. if i post i take my time and read again what i just wrote (i actualy do this with all i ever write) and the funny thing is: 1 out of four post/emails/letters just doesn't make it.

there are people in this forum on who's post one can "rely" and if you see a certain name showing up i a thread you know it is worth reading. i enjoy that and i don't like noise. (wich we are producing here, slowly..)

@dimitrius,

i didn't mean to flame around here, just appelling to decency.

@all,
i suppose he means "jewels".

@atom

I can see your point and agree. Im spending much time browsing this forum. And even if i havent been member for that long i too are tired of reding junk.
My first post to this forum were wors then dimitrius. And DDogg quikly pointed that out to me by letting me win his award of that days "no useful information and lazy post award":rolleyes:
He pointed it out with a since of humor, and after that i did read all stickys and rules. I think that was a better way to do it than what is in progress in this thread.

@dimitrius
Ok your first post were no good for this forum. But dont let them scare you away. Just read the stickys, rules and get to know the forum a little bit better before starting a new thread;)

Cheers
