I've encoded hundreds of hours of DV footage with CCE 2.64 without nary a glitch, however, this evening, I'm encoding some footage converted to DV that originated on VHS. The digital format is the same tried & true DV that always worked happily in CCE, but the content has a lot of shakey hand-held (home movie) footage, which is the only thing different about the footage.
Consistently, with each new attempt, the system fails with "CBC VBV overflow" at frame #17592. I'm using VBR, NOT CBR, 1-pass with 6000 avg, 1000 min, and 9500 max bitrate. I've tried varying these figures and reencoding, but it stops each time at this frame number.
Even though the footage is being converted from DV format, it originated on VHS in 1991. I'm converting old home movies for clients for extra income and this is the first one we are working on.
Is there something drastically different about home video (ie., is the luma signal so far out of whack that CCE can't handle it?)
I'm on the forth attempt at this, and am seeing my profit quickly go into the tank on this job.
I have not has ANY errors of ANY type when converting footage shot with VX2000 cameras. What's different about this footage, if it too has been converted to DV? The data should be the same so CCE shouldn't care, right? But apparently something in the picture CCE doesn't like.
Any ideas (before I return the tape to the customer and turn them away)?
Just in:
I got my trusty calculator out and found out where frame # 17592 is. Right in the middle of some 'video snow' from when the camcorder stopped and started recording segments. Solution was to search the entire video for these glitches and cut them on the Premiere timeline.
Encoding is now progressing smoothly.
Apparently CCE cannot handle the extreme bitrate of 'video snow' and fails.
