View Full Version : Converting ripped chapters to AVI or MPEG's

I apologize if this has already been posted. I searched & still couldn't find a solution.

When extracting chapters using SmartRipper, what can I use to easily & efficiently convert the resultant files (chapter .vob) to either a MPEG2 or AVI?? My editor will only edits avi or mpegs, & I need to edit these chapters. I have been going around in circles by ripping the entire DVD, hook my digital camera to my DVD player, record the chapter I want, edit it, & burn it back onto a DVD with Nero Express.

It would be alot simpler to rip the chapters I need, convert them to avi or mpeg, edit them, & burn them to DVD. Also I think it would be better quality because I would be eliminate the tape stage altogether.

I am unfamiliar with DVD Decrypter as far as making avi's out of the ripped chapters. I tried but didn't end up with what I needed. If it is possible to do it with DVD Decrypter, could someone please explain what settings need to be done, &/or point me to a site that will clarify this? OR can someone suggest another app to do this conversion?

Thanks so much for your help!!

hi and welcome to the forum

ammck55 is right in pointing you to dvd2avi...

i would suggest you to create a dvd2avi project for each chapter (be sure to use version 1.76), then load it into avisynth and load the avisynth script into vdub for editing, or you can of course also edit directly in avisynth, which is faster but more complicated!

oh and what really made me post here (:D):
please NEVER NEVER rape- record from a DVD and then burn to DVD again. this is one of the worst things (quality wise) to do.

also please tell us what kind of editing you want to do to those chapters as there might be even easier and better ways to accomplish this!

Thanks! I will give this a try. I don't see any mention in the process that you end up with a "xxx.avi" file. I guess I will have to go thru the process to see what happens.

Thanks again for the help!!

Thanks, Steve, for the info. I didn't think I was getting the full quality out of the tape proceedure. You have confirmed it for me!!

I would really like to edit these in my current video editing software (Pinnacle Studio 8). I am confortable with it. All I am doing is cutting out the clip I need, doing a fade-in & a fade-out, & saving it to mpeg to burn with Nero Express. I maybe using other transitions & toys that come with Studio 8 in the future so I would like to stick with it.

The only puzzling part I see in the link that ammck55 suggested is that it doesn't mention that you end up with a "xxx.avi" file. Isn't this what it is suppose to do?? Forgive my dumb questions as I am a novice at this now & am trying to ease into this world thru Doom9.com. It looks like you have some really bright guys posting advice & recommendations here.

Thanks again!!

Blinkr:

killingspree has issued some good advice. What it really comes down to, is figuring out what you need to do, getting some software, a guide in your hands, and......starting. There is no substitute for research, reading, and testing. Post back with results/problems and I bet you'll get some more help. When you get stuck, try the search button too; it is your most easily accessible tool, and is a faithful friend. Enjoy the ride, and "Good luck."

ok... i've looked at the link and it seems like ammck55 has probably linked to an outdated guide (or aa fraction)

here's the whole guide:
http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/dvd2avi-frameserving.htm

you will end up with an *.avs script and not with an actual *.avi file, but you should actually be able to load it into your studio and do all the editing you want... without recompressing or anything!

hope this clarifies some things

edit: damnit. mitch was faster... bummer :-P

Thanks to you & ammck55 for the great advice & direction!! I will be testing this out.

Actually, Steve, your link above took me to the same place that ammck55 had in his message. Is there a more up-to-date guide than this?

One question: Is the *.avs script actually a *.avi file? I have not tried loading anything but avi & mpeg's (of course capturing from my camera) in Studio 8. But I will need to test this out!!

Thanks again to the both of you for the help!! And, ammck55, I have been cruising the messageboard quite a bit & have found a load of info. I just need to see this stuff in action!!

damn it... how stupid of me to think that ammck55 would do such a mistake... i think you'll have to go there manually!
on doom9.org hit guides > DivX/ Xvid (upper left corner) > mpeg2dec frameserving guide (quite a bit down...)

ok... anyway... here's the real link... one has to copy it from the link and not from the 'path' of your browser...

oh and no the *.avs is not an *.avi file. it is just a textfile, a script that makes your computer believe it is dealing with your avi. you can pretty much treat it like an avi though!

Ahhh, good work, Mr. killingspree!

@Blinkr - This looks like your ticket. One of the cool things about the forum, is that while your computer is doing its assigned task/s, you can lurk/browse/search and find all kinds of new toys while you're waiting for your results. There is so much information here at Doom9 that it is mind boggling. Enjoy!
