capture DVD screen shots

im using virtual dub and i cant get screen shots of my dvds. I wanted to psot them online for everyone to see the difference between dvd2one and dvdshrink compression quality.

everytime i capture i jsut get a black box, is this a copyrighted measure?

how do you guys go around this?

Welcome to Doom9's forum! I hope you find it useful.

First, I think you may have posted in the wrong forum. This is the "capture" forum, all right, but we're talking about capture of analog video sources, such as video tape, broadcast, satellite, and cable, using analog -> digital capture hardware.

DVD's we do with DVD-ROM drives and digital transfer methodologies, as you seem to be doing.

It appears you are asking about using Vdub to copy a single frame into the clipboard. That's easy enough: Open your AVI or MPEG file, select the frame, and press Ctrl-1. Then you can paste the image into a picture editor, such as Microsoft Paint, and save it as a .bmp or .jpg file.

yes it soudns simple and ive tried that and many other programs

but there is something to do with the copyright protection.
maybe i am in the right forum, because i have also tried to do an analog capture of my dvd and the macrovision bars appear everywhere.
mayeb the same macrovision breaking applies to my screenshot and capturing video.

so i still cant capture screen shots of my dvds. i jsut get a black box

Yes, most commercial DVDs have macrovision for analog protection. And, since you have a DVD-ROM, I recommend you don't bother using analog capture techniques.

You need to "rip" your DVD's to hard disk if you want to make comparisons.

And, if you're looking to get an unencrypted demacrovisioned digital frame from a VOB, I recommend using DVD Decrypter or SmartRipper, which will do both. Doom9 has guides for both applications.

Then, open the appropriate VOB in VdubMod (which I believe can use .vob files as input), and use Ctrl-1.

I see what you're doing here. You are actually PLAYING your DVD in
a dvd "software" player. And, when you perform your screen capture
(by whatever means) and copy it to clipboard, and then proceed to
paste it into an editing app (any like paintshop, etc) you get these
black screens.

Ok, first, the black screens (black copied data from clipboard) is
not from macrovisoin or even copyprotect.. as I proved the copy
protection theory negative, by feeding in my OWN MPEG encodes from
captures. I stil got the blackend copies.

This seems to be an issue w/ how OVERLAY is used to display images
onto your screen. It's not handled the usual/traditional old way
of moving data back and forth in memory, but rather how it pushes
data back and forth from your Graphics cards memory instead.. or
somthing like that. Don't know the exact details of it, but remember
that OVERLAY had something to do w/ it, and you won't be able to
screen copy (no matter what form you use, unless you know the system
enough to get the memory dump via the graphics card's OVERLAY etc)
..did that make sense ?
But, whatever the issues..

You can still get images copied to clipboard or even files by either
using offline apps, ie, Snagit (I think it even copies OVERLAY) other
wise, you can definately use PowerDVD, and while the movie is playing
inside, and you have PDVD the active (focused) app, you can obtain a
copy of the window's video frame by pressing plain old "C" (not Ctrl+C)

That's a more likely interpretation. I assumed an attempted capture from a standalone player via Vdub, using something like an ATI AIW card. :rolleyes:
