I also noticed a new reg settings on this page HERE (http://pinnacle.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/pinnacle.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_sid=Za8TbBJg&p_lva=&p_faqid=2206&p_created=1047892662&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9ncmlkc29ydD0mcF9yb3dfY250PTQyJnBfc2VhcmNoX3RleHQ9JnBfc2VhcmNoX3R5cGU9MyZwX3Byb2RfbHZsMT00OCZwX3Byb2RfbHZsMj01MSZwX2NhdF9sdmwxPX5hbnl_JnBfc29ydF9ieT1kZmx0JnBfcGFnZT0x&p_li=)

DWORD: DVDDestSize Default: 4424
Size InstantCopy tries to reach for the destination medium in MB

DWORD: DVDDestDisplaySize Default: 4424
Size InstantCopy uses to determine if the contents of the disc
fit or wont fit on a recordable disc in MB

DWORD: DVDVideoSaveBorder Default: 2
Unsecurity in percent of the transcoding process [/B]

DVDVideoSaveBorder is interesting cos it looks like a black bar issue, trying it on Road To Perdition now

p.s. LOL :D "Phantom cell sets" fixed , like the quotes round Phantom Pinnacle, whatever gave you that idea?

I'm just gonna assume this is cumulative like update2 was.
Do let us know how Road to Perdition comes out MackemX.

batch processing now available HERE (http://pinnacle.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/pinnacle.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_sid=l*h4wAJg&p_lva=&p_faqid=2545)
download the file HERE (http://pinnacle.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/pinnacle.cfg/php/enduser/fattach_get.php?p_sid=JFUstBJg&p_tbl=10&p_id=1995&p_created=1053351666)

the missing MB's do now work on my example DVD I sent them

not so sure with other DVD'S tho, cos it looks the same as before

a known problem DVD showing 6.77Gb instead of 7.05Gb still shows 6.77Gb :(

if you wanna get it to set to the max for a blank DVD (4489MB)automatically then set the reg settings to these

DWORD: DVDDestSize Default: 1189 (4489)
Size InstantCopy tries to reach for the destination medium in MB

DWORD: DVDDestDisplaySize Default: 1189(4489)
Size InstantCopy uses to determine if the contents of the disc
fit or wont fit on a recordable disc in MB

you could set them lower to be safer, but I like a risk :D

:( :( :( :( :( :(

exactly the same undersizing result with Road To Perdition :(

came out at 3.38GB

it did predict 4.37Gb with menu @50% and Title 1 at 86% with 5.1 sound (nothing else) but got nowhere near :(

gonna adjust the DVDVideoSaveBorder setting and see what happens

but this is no good cos what if other titkes are different ratios ????????

not the sizing fix I was expecting

Blank DVD-R 4,489MB 4,706,074,624 bytes or 4.383GB

the saving the settings don't work either

you save the settings (F6) and when you reload them (F7) it remembers which titles and audio/subs you selected but not the percentages

it just does an automatic resize and equally distributes the reduction on the menu/titles

so far, not so good an update as what I initially thought it was gonna be :(

somebody noted that this new version registers everytime it starts a regtool application to run at start-up in startup folder of windows. If you look to properties of shortcut you will see that target is your serial number.....

O yeah registry entry DVDsavequality is also gone...

mmmm... wonder why they do this

I tried a DVDVideoSaveBorder of 50 and it came out at 3.30Gb with exactly the same % settings as before

so its smaller!!! cos the default of 2 produced 3.38Gb

oh well, maybe next time

yes.... it took me 1 hour and 45mins for 6.2GB main movie only. Usually that'd take about 3 hours. So I say yes to the 33% increase in speed.

With the "main movie only" scenario:
Was the sizing closer to 4.37? Any visual improvements?

actually it was 6.9GB main movie only not 6.2 like I thought.. it came out to 4.20GB so I guess not too bad.

as for sizing, how come Pinnacle have released it saying beter use of 4.37Gb yet it don't work

it may give better results for 1.85:1 etc but not 2.35:1. We'll see

I'v try'd the same film three times.ENOUGH 16:9 anamorphic.
1st time i left all extras in ect,a full 1:1 copy setting the slide bar to 4.31.Size when finished 4.7.
2nd time move only leaving the slide bar at 4.31 came out at 4.40
3rd time same as the 1st full 1:1 but dropped the slide bar down to 4.2,size it can out 4.24.
So now instead of oversizing to get a nice tight fit,i'm having to undersize to get it some where near.

I,m gonna try another disc to see what happens there.

Have they not noticed their competitors programs size within 5%

You FAIL to forget that IC does not apply constant transcoding quality to the movie but adjusts it according to the complexity of each part of the mpeg stream. It is easy to calculate the space required when you use constants, but it is not that easy when you don't know in advance exactly how much transcoding is used for the entire mpeg stream.

Still getting multicopy.exe errors. Had them with 7.01 and 7.02 anytime i try to use "customized resize". If I do, and just use "automatic" sizing, it works. Reading Pinnacle's forums, I was under the impression that they were working to address multicopy errors.

It is faster though. About a third faster from what I've seen.

IC is actually very accurate when you use a 'true' 4:3 title. With a little bit of calculated oversizing it will normally be at least 98% accurate

IC seems to correct itself as it goes along as this is very apparent in 4:3 episode DVD's by the wave like patterns. The accuracy of the predictions for each episode varies for each episode but overall it's quite accurate on average

the problems arise when you get the black bars in the video or very static yet still part motion menu's as this throw's off IC in a big way cos it doesn't realise how much space it does save during processing

I just can't work out how this DVDVideoSaveBorder works. It's a shame but at least they are listening to our problems and suggestions cos I suggested this sort of thing on my site ages ago

Pinnacle could actually fix/overcome this by having a ratio option/check that disregarded the black bars when doing calculations by cropping them and only looking at the centre of the image without taking the black bars into consideration

they also fixed the 'phantom' MB issue with my DVD's I sent them but sadly not with other problem DVD's as some have the 0.xx sec entries in other PGC's apart from the first and therefore sizes reported are still incorrect :(

@MackemX

I wonder if we'd be seeing the sizing issue with InstantCopy if IC were to go through its five-pass information-gathering BEFORE giving us the option to scale the size and/or remove streams. Since Sound streams are encoded at constant bitrates (unless I'm mis-informed), removing any of those shouldn't prove challenging to calculating any estimated size.

Thinking about it, back in the days of using CCE, if you wanted to plan out your final file size, you'd have to first run a single pass so that CCE could compile information regarding the stream. After the initial pass, you could then scale the bitrate of CCE until it predicted a desired filesize. CCE was/is usually pretty close to what it predicted.

Now, compare this to InstantCopy. IC doesn't appear to analyze very much of ANYTHING before giving you the option to remove stuff...set the desired size...blah-blah-blah. Only AFTER you make these choices does IC do its five-pass analysis. What if it did the five-pass BEFORE allowing you to make any choices? Wouldn't that make the final product that much closer? I realize that it'd make for more patience on the part of the user... but I doubt I'd be the only one here willing to wait on the program if it meant more accurate file sizes!

Mrbass and yourself have probably forgotten more about this program than most of us will ever know (your advice is MAJORLY appreciated and helpful), so I figured you'd be the one to ask this of. Would something like this make sense within the scope of IC? After all, if you substitute Pinnacle's encoder for CCE, this is essentially what DVD2DVD-R is doing: Basically providing an interface to allow you to re-construct your original DVD with a re-encoded video stream -- only IC would match the original's structure. Any of this make sense?

I have two DVDs that I cannot backup reliably with IC7 both R2:

Das Boot Directors Cut: Fails at 99%
Road to Perdition: Doesn't fail but quality poor due to resizing error.

I've re-encoded both with DVDshrink and the results were fine. IC7 remains my preferred choice because its quality is better overall. A combo of both should cover all bases.

Why do you make excuses for them? As a consumer who bought the program I don't really care about the inner workings of the software.
I only care about the end results on all sources and this program is failing miserably by wasting sometimes 30% of space that could be used for quality.

This would be like buying a new car only to find out it will go no faster than 45mph on cloudy days.

I agree that this should be worked out. I hope it will be. But the majority of the time it still looks as good or better than the competition even when the competition can use a bit more data space. And for only $20. The fact that it re-encodes has two side effects: better quality per MB, and less accurate prediction. Given that, I'll deal with it.

This update is cool. Thank goodness I checked this forum today, because the store-bought IC bombed on the first menu of Jackie Chan's Project A2, just out on R1. The update got past that, and by tomorrow, it should be finished encoding the rest of the disc. (Update: It finished fine, and the dvd-r looks good).

Just a thought about the "DVDVideoSaveBorder"... From the results that people have been posting, it appears that this option is not tied to black borders in the video. In fact, if you look at Pinnacle's description of this setting, "Unsecurity in percent of the transcoding process", it seems that this is only some other type of buffer area or "border" used by IC in its calculations, similar to the "DVDSaveQuality" setting. In any case, it doesn't appear that DVDVideoSaveBorder has anything to do with actual borders in the video.

I just gave it a try in batch mode and did 5 discs of episodic titles. Before, without tinkering it gave about 3.9 Gb - on the five I did I had disc sizes of 4.24 to 4.29 Gb, which is spot on for me as I try and avoid going right to the limit even when using CCE because of the problem the occassional blank has with dye quality.

Speed is better at I guess 30 to 40% improvement. Great product and update.

Did you try to prepare the DVD like in your guide with this new update? I want to backup "The Fast and the Furious" and i deleted some vobs id(trailer's, music videos) like in your guide "3) Multiple Movie/Extras VOB ID removal" but i always get a error with IC:"List index out of bounds (-1) error".
I don't understant why this happened, because with v7.02 this didn't occurs.

Thx for the help.

I made a backup last night of my newly Purchased Star trek Nemesis. I dropped all the extras to 45% and the main movie to around 74%. This was my first film encoded since upgrading to the lastest version. I removed all the audi except for the 5.1. I guesstimated oversizing to 4.45gb and let it fly. It was a good gues because the result was 4.35 (I was sweating that one) I did'nt really notice a speed increase over the previous version it still took rougly 4hrs on My Athlon XP1700 system with 512k of ram. The resuly looked pretty nice thou, even the extras. You had a bit of Pixelization in some scenes, but overall alot of it was very close to the original.

About sizing problems, I would say it is simply unacceptable. Some argue it does variable bitrate transcoding and that makes it hard or near to impossible to predict the final size. Ok, good. CCE also has this functionality and the solution is simple: make it run twice!
I'm not saying this has to be the only way to go, but at least Pinnacle could implement an option for the user to enable a second pass or not.
I would say people satys with IC because of the quality gain compared to other software, otherwise nobody would be using it...

Before everyone gets all gooey with this release, I just found a R1 Dvd that it crashes on in automatic resize mode: Max, the Lions Gate movie with John Cusack. I even tried manual resize by shrinking the extras down to 40% and the main movie to a level where the total was under 4.3GB. Although IC finishes without bombing, this does not generate a build that can be burned, whether IC goes to the burner (0xFFFFFFFF access error), or Prassi Primo uses the pdi-extracted files. PP analyzes the set, starts initialization, then kicks out the disc to be burned. The disc is not turned into a coaster thanks to this early error checking. The weird thing is that Windvd can load the video_ts directory of extracted files and play the movie.

Update 5-23-03. By using IFOEDIT to build a VIDEO_TS.IFO file with the movie only, IC succeeds in compressing the movie to around 4.3 GB. The only thing is that this IC can no longer burn to a Sony DRX-500ULX firewire drive. The latest and greatest VOBHW.DLL (5-9-03) generates an access error. Well, one step forward and one step backward. The workaround is to use PDITOOL to extract the ifo and vob files from the pdi files and burn with Record Now DX.

This is the best update so far. Big thumbs up to Pinnacle! It even solves the border video corruption problems I saw on some video sourced content. (MTV's Jackass movie is a good "bulk" example.) It's faster and the quality is as good and, in some cases, better. The target size seems to be far more accurate. I get very, very close without screwing with the size.

for some strange reason I ran the new IC using Road To Perdition and got speeds of 2.0Mb/s plus quite often

yet now when I stick the 6Gb DVD I created using 8 episodes of Friends through it, it ran at 700kb/s on average barely peaking above 1.0Mb/s  and took bloomin ages to complete!!!!

wonder why?

I've messed on with reg settings using InstantTool, so I'm gonna reinstall update and see if it goes back to normal

I did Sopranos S1-1 and decided that if I was very mean with the extras that I could leave the episodes untouched. Did this and it took about 15 mins but was slightly over the 4.38Gb. No problem thought I and repeated the process but increased the compression on the extras a little bit more. It ran for about 30 mins but was predicting 8 hours so I broke it. Strange.

Just tried RTP again and again it was peaking over 2.0Mb/s so it seems to be lower average bitrates that seems to slow IC down

Friends is about 3800 and RTP is 4900 ish

Friends is processing slower probably cos its harder to fit 3800 into say 3000 than it is to fit 4900 into 3700 for RTP even tho the rates of reduction are the same

one of the wise guys may step in soon and put us all at rest as to EXACTLY why but I have my idea why

but it would be nice to see the full length mathematical reason behind it :D

To save from try-and-error, perhaps we should do it in 2 steps:
(1)Rip the DVD with InstantCopy for whatever you like (de-select the audio/subtitles/movie parts you want to remove from). Just keep the movie and the rest to be copied in 100% without reducing the size at all. The ripping would be fast because there is no need for the program to calculate to the nearest possible size within a 4.7GB single sided DVD-R.
(1.1)Use PDITool to extract all video contents from the *.pdi to a folder.
(2)Now the over-sized DVD-in-harddisc can be once again processed by DVD2One. The re-sizing is much easier for DVD2One by selecting "Full Disc" copy.

Now you should get an full near-4.7GB copy without losing time trying and trying...repeating from error and error.

@drpaulng

Have you been able to make your method work? Every time I try this, either DVD2ONE bombs out or, if I get that far, the video fails to work in my standalone. I've used DVD2ONE (1.1.3) plenty of times without PDITOOL and every video works on the standalone. The same movies that I can't get the PDITOOL>DVD2ONE route to work, always work after redoing IC-7 with the right sizing. I'm burning from .pdi using DVD Decrypter, and if DVD2ONE is used, I use ImgTools ver. 0.89 to create the .iso from the VIDEO_TS directory then DVD Decryptor.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong here. Using PDITOOL ver. 0.7, for path to .pdi files I double click the .pdi showing in the directory that's filled with IC-7's output, and desitination folder is a VIDEO_TS tht I created beforehand. Then I just click "Extract all files." Isn't this right?

Would really like to do it this way since I can always oversize IC-7 by just a little and quickly hit the DVD-R capacity with DVD2ONE.

Thanks for any ideas on why it's not working for me.

Regards,

Well the idea is right but it does not work with DVD2One as it treats the DVD contents retrieved from the *.pdi as an incomplete set of files (I found it after an experiment soon after my thread was sent).

I have tried DVD95Copy with no good result too.

It seems there is no good solution to re-shrink the *.pdi contents.

The reason why IC is slower on low bitrate movies is in my opinion that not the MB/s is constant, but the frame conversion rate... So it will always process (nearly) the same amount of pictures in a time, e.g. making that a 7Mbit/s movie is (nearly) twice as fast (in MB/s) as a 3.5Mbit/s movie... (I think the incoming MBs are displayed and not the written to harddisk MBs...)

Using IC to strip Titles then using DVD2One is just asking for trouble as I've shown in a few examples :)

it's useless, unless they've updated the removal method of course but I very much doubt it :(

Thx for the help.

Pedro Oliveira I didn't do anything with the DVD

I've never seen a (-1) error before, maybe this is because they have changed the way it reads the IFO's to compensate for the phantom MB's but now it's even tougher to get it to accept stuff

I won't know till I do a DVD backup but I ain't doing much at the mo so I won't find out just yet :)

when you are deleting the VOB ID's are you completely emptying the PGC's of entries?

Maybe i am wrong and isn't a (-1) error but (1) error, i can't remember correctly.

When i deleted the VOB ID's the PGC stays with the other VOB ID that only has 0:00:12 of time(I don't know if i am making myself clear enough :) ), it doesn't stay completely empty.

I bet because it's interlaced. I always noticed that IC7 transcodes interlaced material at only roughly half the speed it achieves for progressive video.

Has anyone noticed that with this new version, you're unable to custom resize some titles on the disc that you would have been able to before?

I know that really small (like 18K) titles were always grayed out, but now titles that are 300MB in size are grayed out, preventing me from adjusting them.

I first noticed this on the "Son of the Beach" DVDs and I just noticed it again on the "Futurama" DVDs. Everything works fine but I have to leave one title at the rate that IC decided to compress it at, even though I can adjust the others. If I uninstall IC and go back to the previous version, that title can be adjusted as well.

Any ideas why this is?

Okay, ignore that "everything works fine" bit. The "Futurama" DVDs seem to be having some problems with IC.

I have tried to strip off some parts of a DVD and set the final DVD size at different levels (all over-sized). However, I set them differently from 60% to 95%, the result is ALWAYS THE SAME (I've got a total of 3.7GB).

So, what is the mechanism behind IC's re-sizing control?

Why does DVD2One always get us to the 4.36GB while IC always varies.

Why DVD2One cannot further shrink the IC's *.pdi DVD contents.

If the new version of DVD2One can do what the IC's doing (de-selecting titles/subtitles/soundtracks), I'd throw away IC right away without care about it's fatal uncertainty in getting the right size down.

hmmmm....looks like this new update is a bit buggy.
I used to strip out unnecessary features/tracks using DVDtoolbox and then IC7 to resize..surprisingly the final size was very close to fita dvd-5.
Okay.
Last update installed, and also installed PINNACLE INSTANT DISC 7, both purchased regularly.
At this stage I cannot work it out any longer..dunno why but stripping is okay, but when starting IC7 I ALWAYS get an "access violation", memory error.
Tried different versions of DVDToolbox, and also DVDShrink.
Bizarre, same result.
Next step b4 rolling back to update2 will be to see how it works without Instant Disc 7, just out of curiosity.

It does seem peculiar, but then the number of titles that IC shows EXCEEDS the number of titles in the original dvd. So maybe the new "titles" are pgc's or angles from the original ones, and some may be menu-based, which they prefer not to shrink. You may want to post this question on Pinnacle's message board.

http://webboard.pinnaclesys.com/read_threads.asp?WebboardID=1&ForumID=877&SectionID=170&Start=1&lng=1

Another theory: I think IC is showing you the title maps. These can easily exceed the title count on the dvd.

Does anyone know if this update is better with Multi-Angle movies like 007-Die Another Day?

Thx, in advance....

Arianos

@ Mancubas:
I did 007 - Die another day.
The size prediction was excellent (automatic settings on IC7, recommended settings in "InstantCopySettings") at 4,32 GB (4.644.861.952 bytes)
but the angles handling was not acceptable. Some annoying problems on a Philips 743 standalone, but on a Saba (Thompson) 100, the angles were jumbing from one to another. Not good at all..

P.S. Size prediction seems to be solved. I've done about 10 movies so far, all on "Auto" and Recommended settings in "InstantCopySettings", ALL came out pretty close to perfection. I'm satisfied as far as size is concerned.
BUT
I still see the long existing bug of the "transparent menu", and a brand new one, that's already been reported, that when you fix the movie "the Mackem-X way" sometimes it freezes, even at 100%.

Bottomline is that you can't so much as remove an ID to get rid of a Warning Screen without 7.1.1 giving the (-1) error. 7.0.2 didn't do this.

I know I can bypass some of this stuff with IFOEDIT, but sometimes I want to strip an ID to make SPACE before using IC.

I love the new speed but this creates a lot of extra hassle just when the product was starting to improve other things.

Now I am compressing over sized and then stripping which is a lot of math, trial and error and hassle...

Anyone got a solution...?

You can delete content after running InstantCopy. Since sizing is so much more accurate, this works pretty well. Say you want to remove a 120 MB VOB. Just run InstantCopy with a target of 4.37 + 120 = 4.49 GB. For the VOB being removed, put the video up at 100%. After InstantCopy finishes, use IFOEdit (or your preferred tool) to remove the VOB.

That's NO GOOD to me... After I run Instant Copy I would have to convert from pdi files that are ready to burn back to VOBs just to do a simple strip.

Bottomline is that Pinnacle needs to understand that not all of us use JUST their product as it comes... Some of us want to be in control of the finished disk...

If I can't control my projects without extra and unnecessary steps, that sucks... I have two choices... Go back to 7.02 and WAIT for longer processing times... or use 7.1.1 and go through extra time consuming steps to do a POST IC strip job...

I appreciate those that would offer work arounds or defend a good product... But since all releases prior to 7.1.1 did not put these restrictions on us it is clear it does not have to be this way...

Any solution I have thought of or heard here just costs me time... Time improvement is what Pinnacle needed most... I think it is in all our interests to voice the issue to Pinnacle politely and firmly...

There will not be a fix unless we all complain to Pinnacle that this IS A PROBLEM...

Just my 2 cents... Jeff

just post on the Pinnacle forum site, I do and listed I listed 4 fixes before the last update HERE (http://webboard.pinnaclesys.com/read_messages.asp?WebboardID=1&ForumID=877&SectionID=170&ThreadID=137246&ThreadStart=200&Pos=206&cntThread=316&lng=1) and they fixed 3 of them (well 2 at least cos sizing is still an issue for me tho not others, this one HERE (http://webboard.pinnaclesys.com/read_messages.asp?WebboardID=1&ForumID=877&SectionID=170&ThreadID=136109&ThreadStart=100&Pos=137&cntThread=316&lng=1) and this one HERE (http://webboard.pinnaclesys.com/read_messages.asp?WebboardID=1&ForumID=877&SectionID=170&ThreadID=137159&ThreadStart=200&Pos=201&cntThread=316&lng=1))

I've even posted about wanting a VIDEO_TS format in at least two posts but can't find them as search aint working, cos you could have added to that request too. I've posted other things aswell on that site and Josh does pass the info on if you ask politely enough but I doubt you will get support for your problem if you say you are removing VOB ID's from a commercial DVD :), so it's best not mention the DVD title or else you will get the disclaimer notice

I wouldn't call 15 seconds of usertime using PDITOOL and say 12-15 processing to extract the PDI time consuming tho for a temp fix (a niggle maybe) and if it works until a fix is in place thats fine for me cos I extract them regardless anyway (I've never directly burnt a PDI file) to check it all works before burning but I ain't used the update properly yet anyway but I may have a play later today

bear in mind that this product is marketed as a 1:1 backup tool for fully compliant DVD's and not something that will backup chopped up commercial DVD's even tho it should cos it has :(

if you ain't happy then post it on the board cos they do listen even if you have to kick them up the a$$ sometimes but I don't think they'll address the problem as it's a self inflicted one using copyrighted DVD's

IC is working just fine, it's the stripping that is causing the problem as Ifoedit ain't updating the IFO's enough

so it's pointless complaining to Pinnacle when in fact it's the user that is causing the problem by stripping the DVD :)

I looked at the post you sent... If all it takes is to go update chapter numbers after stripping an unwanted ID thats very cool to know... Take me 3 seconds after the strip do do that while I am still in IFOEDIT...

Then I am onto IC AUTOMATIC pdi creation and DVD Decryptor to burn...

Hope it works ... I'll try several examples and let you know...

First off Mr Smiley Man THANK YOU for the answer to my problem... I have successfully corrected chapter numbers in the appropriate Titles of all VOB IDs I have been stripping. I have done this strip and title number correction 7 times on 5 different movies.

Each time I check the movie with IC 7.1.1 after strip and before chapter correction. Each time I get (-1) error.

Next I correct chapter number in title and run IC 7.1.1 again and NO error... You were dead on about what was new in IC.

My new opinion is probably more in line with your own. It is NOT an IC issue. In fact, IC is just being MORE diligent. It is in fact an IFOEDIT issue as the program should correct for the number of chapters removed in the stripping process. If only DERROW would get fired from THOSE GUYS and come back to us.

Thanks again... I did look at your guide and if people don't get it they are not ready for prime time.

MackemX..... Some feedback as requested. The guides are great, and very much appreciated! The only one I found a bit confusing was the " Removing VOB ID's from PGC " . It was just the language that got me, the " Newly Authored Original,Original,Authored.etc... " I didn't fully understand what IFOUpdate was doing, and where it was doing it, but with some doinking around it was made to work. Just want to say thanks again for all your work!

I don't really know myself :D, I guess all IFOUpdate does is takes the values from the Authored IFO (the IFO that IFOEdit created after stripping VOB ID's) and uses the structure of the Original IFO and creates a Newly Authored IFO (result from IFOUpdate) by filling this structure with the copied values or something like that

I have found another way of dealing with PGC's with single vob's that you want to strip WITHOUT requiring IfoUpdate.

Lets say you have the following structure in a Titleset (like I did recently with Fargo) -

PGC1 Vob1, 1 Chapter and no blank frame vob
PGC2 Vob2, 1 Chapter and no blank frame vob

I wanted to get rid of vob1 and vob2 but if you strip them both you will get the usuall error from Ifoedit. I could have just stripped vob1 or vob2 but they were both too big and compromised the end quality.

Solution -

1. Run IC FIRST, allowing for the Title set size you are going to remove
2. Use the m2v remux function using a blank m2v vob
3. The structure above is retained but now with the 12kb VTS which is want you need
4. Go into the VTS PGC table using Ifoedit and change the celltimes for a single frame vob (as per previous instructions using Ifoupdate)

All is well and you can burn away. If you try to preview the titles you will get an error message - don't worry the player should accept them (My Fussy Phillips does - a good acid test)

When I have those rare Single chapter Single ID PGCs to deal with I pop the thing into DVD Shrink and use it's simple slider bar to edit out all but a tiny split secong clip (4 to 5 frames) No MUX REMUX... No compression... Just a simple removal of the unwanted portion of the ID in question... I put that finished VTS back into my working movie files and Get Sectors...

Takes just a second and all is intact... From there run IC or whatever is next in your process...

Also works well when you want to remove extra hollywood logos at the beginning of a movie but they are part of the first chapter of the main movie PGC.

I find I can strip out all unwanted IDs... correct chapters... in IFOEDIT so fast then run IC in auto mode for perfect sizing to finshed pdi and BURN... I know if IC likes it chances are all is well...

When you muck around again after IC... I think your just asking for trouble... I say clean it up... strip it out... correct chapters and sectors... run IC... BURN baby BURN... !

Every movie starts with DVD Decryptor and ends with DVD Decryptor...

6th June 2003, 11:49
Your solution is OK if the titleset contains only ONE unwanted PGC with single chapter. If the titleset has more than one then DVDShrink won't work because it creates a flat structure result (each PGC becomes a new Titleset) which you cannot insert back into the original structure.

MackernX - any way round this?

there are so many different scenario's for removing unwanted stuff so I can't do a guide for each one, but if I was doing what you are explaining to do regarding a Single chapter Single VOB ID PGC then there is no need for DVDShrink at all

All I would do is just rename the blank VTS_0x_1.VOB file I have to replace the VOB I didn't want then GET VTS Sectors

why create a blank VOB using DVDShrink everytime? when the blank VOB has a single VOB ID which is the same as it's replacement so works just fine

it's upto you which method you use but I guess this method is the quickest

DVD Maniac
6th June 2003, 20:28
I was referring to situations when you have a Titleset containing multiple PGC's and you want to remove more than one of them. Your method of a single blank vob replacement will not work for these cases (Remember my 007 Bond examples we played around with :D )

Its a shame that DVDShrink collapses the output to a flat file structure - its trimming function would be so much more powerful if it retained the original structure

We still await the "Perfect" one click product.........

I have concluded that there really is no simple way of achieving compliant structures when you attempt Title stripping for ALL possible structures.

Take this one for example (Oceans Eleven)-

Title Set 1 PGC 1 (Main Movie)
PGC 2 - 4 (Single Chapter blanks)
PGC 5 -7 (Single chapter, single vob Trailers)

Title Set 2 PGC 1 (Making of, single vob)
PGC 2 (Behind scenes, single vob)

I want to ditch all the crappy trailers and extras. For Title set 2 you cannot use the vob strip method as there are no blank frame vob's to leave to leave the PGC structure intact.

Solution : Leave it alone at 100% till after IC compresses main movie, then do a blank frame remux as I mentioned earlier in the thread. (Doing the necessary sizing allowances before IC does its thing)

Title set 1 is more tricky - again no convenient short vob's to leave and this time the remux method is no good either because the main movie is in this title!

Solution : Again, process them after IC compression (Strip out unwanted trailer vob's and reconstruct the Cell and PGC tables using the IfoUpdate method)

If any of the current products can come up with a way of Title stripping and ending up with a fully compliant structure for ALL possible structures then I will be VERY impressed.

DVDShrink is NEARLY there - it just needs a mod which allows you to retain the first frame of unwanted Titles using its crop function in Full disc mode (no flat file output)

We wait in hope......:sly:

"You FAIL to forget that IC does not apply constant transcoding quality to the movie but adjusts it according to the complexity of each part of the mpeg stream. It is easy to calculate the space required when you use constants, but it is not that easy when you don't know in advance exactly how much transcoding is used for the entire mpeg stream."
DoItFast4U use CCE which is an external program with VBR and calculate final size at around 4.36GB. So does Reauthorist. Why can't Instantcopy?

5th July 2003, 09:43
In the meantime I transcoded quite a few movies with IC7 and most of them came out very close to 4.37GB after setting recommended settings with hidden settings editor. However "From Hell" refused to reach more than 4GB in several tries. My guess is that the reason for this is, that this movies has a lot of dark scenes. It is known that IC7 tries to compress dark parts of frames much more since blocking in very dark parts is nearly invisible.
Maybe if the part analyzed contains (percent wise) less dark scenes than the whole movie, IC7 predicts a wrong compression factor.

To avoid this, IC7 would need a true two pass approach which would make it much slower.

I have the impression that IC7 saves some data about the analysis process in "discdata". If you increase the size to be analyzed, IC7 seems to skip the analysis and take the data from this directory.
So to analyze again, delete or rename the files in this path.
You also have to disable the internet data base access with hidden settings editor. If you increase the size to be analyzed now, it should influence the accuracy.
In the meantime, I transcoded 4 more movies and they all came out very close to 4.37GB.

I'm not sure whether anybody reported this bug before, but on some of the movies that I did with IC7, after reduced the size to roughly 4.3G, I used PDITools to extract the files. Sometimes I get all the files, but quite often, the VIDEO_TS.VOB is missing. This is not a random thing, as it consistently happened on some particular DVD. On a particular DVD, I tried 4 times, and every times the resultant DVD missing the VIDEO_TS file.

Has anybody seen this problem before? and is there a way to fix this problems?

Is it a problem? VIDEO_TS.VOB is not a required file, it is present only if there is vmg menues, ie title menu and sub-menues. vts root menues go into vts_xx_0.vob
So, is the file present on the DVD, and are you keeping the title menu?

Yes, the original DVD has the VIDEO_TS.VOB and I was keeping everything, but some came out without the VIDEO_TS.VOB file (and I checked the Original which does have it), and some came out with it

Yes the same happened to me several times. And I keep the original menues at 100% (no compression). And yes, VIDEO_TS.VOB is present in the original DVD... IC simply doesn't copy it. My simple solution is to uncompress the .pdi files in a folder and copy there the original VIDEO_TS.VOB, which is usually pretty small. Still, it would be better if IC copied it directly...

Why don't you use PDI2ISO? It's faster anyway. The ISO can be either burned or mounted (using Daemon Tools)...

How would PDI2ISO solve our problems? as the original PDI files does not contains the VIDEO_TS.VOB file.

I would have guessed that it might be a problem of PDITool. Since none of the (quite a few) IC7 transcoding had any problems with missing files. At least I didn't notice it: neither when testing the image nor when watching the DVD on my standalone player.
Sometimes I remove the copyright warning from VIDEO_TS.VOB and then it might be missing, but so what?

I don't think it's a PDITOOLS problem. I get the problem on average about 1 in 4 DVD. You don't know if the file is missing if you convert from PDI to ISO and burned. But if you extracted and used Nero or RecordNow Max to burn then they will complain and you realised there are missing files.

WinDVD is usually crashing if a vob is missing and since I mount every image and test it with WinDVD before burning, it can't be that bad.

I played the extracted files (with the missing Video_ts.vob) with WinDVD V5.0 as well and it did not complained at all. I only get the errors when I burned with Nero or RecordNow Max. So I guess that WinDVD just skipped the missing file and played on.

I did actually burned the files with the missing video_ts.vob and they played on my stand alone DVD player without any problems.

normally IC doesn't copy the VIDEO_TS.VOB across as IC cannot pickup any reference to it in the IFO's but if the VIDEO_TS.VOB is missing afterwards some standalone players will not play the DVD (my fussy Sony is one!) as software players are a lot less forgiving than standalones. Nero will complain about this as it does pickup reference to this VOB in the IFO's

IIRC I normally just extract the files, insert the VIDEO_TS.VOB and then use Get VTS Sectors and burn with Nero and it plays in my fussy Sony :D

I used to think the burning programs you paid for were wonderful. Like RecordNow Max and Nero. But since dvd decrypter is free and can burn a pdi file, why bother with the other programs? The only reason you would want personal control of the burn is to add more files or subdirectories. But dvd-r's are so cheap, who needs to do that?

If Stomp and Nero were so smart, why wouldn't they probe VIDEO_TS.IFO to determine if VIDEO_TS.VOB were needed, instead of assuming it always was needed? Another crazy thing I have found about Stomp is that for the Sony Firewire burner, they can't burn an empty AUDIO_TS folder to dvd+r, in data mode. But they can with dvd+rw. That makes no sense to me. So goodbye Stomp and Nero. Who needs to pay for the privilege of making coasters, when I can use a free program like DD which does not make coasters. The other thing I like about DD is the iso read and write feature for dvd-5 discs. It keeps the JACKET_P folder and any other files that were on the original dvd.

Your point about DVD Decryptor being an awesome tool is right. But it isn't really FREE. It cost time and money to build. Everyone reading this that uses it and likes it should take a moment and go make a donation.

I say this to all of us (myself included).

Cheers

Does anyone know why Pinnacle's site shows a date of 7/7/2003 for the latest 7.1.1 Update? This came out in May right? Wonder if they've updated the update. Here's the link I'm talking about.

No, it's from May. They seem to always screw up those dates.
