View Full Version : Backing up dvd with TV show episodes

Hi,
I have attemtped several backups of TV show episodes from dvd. In some cases the dvd will have an ifo file for each episode. This works fine, select the ifo(episode) you want and ripp. However I have a dvd with 2 one hour episodes plus a "making of" doco. It has 2 ifo files. One is for opening splash screen rubbish the others apears to be for the rest of the dvd. There are six vbo files. Three are for the first episode and can be ripped and encoded without problem. I select the same ifo file and delete the first three vbo files to rip the second episode. DVD2SVCD hangs and its all over. Am I doing the right thing or is there a bug?

At this point dvd2svcd is going nowhere. The kbyte/sec indicator is blank and if left for hours the program brings the system to a grinding halt with nothing ripped. If I rip the ifo file without deleting the first 3 vob files only the first 3 vo files are ripped.

The line I've highlight is you're problem. You should have atleast 10-20 GB free on your drive C: before you attempt to convert a dvd.

The rip would be smaller than the free space available. I have allso tried it on another machine with far more space and axperienced the same behaviour. I will do it again on that machine and produce a log for your perusal.

Thank you
Steven

Same again. The rip would use a couple of gig. I should point out in this case the dvd-rom in another machine over a peer to peer ethernet. (Just 2 pcs)This arangment works fine.

Have you tried DVD Decryptor?

http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Rippers/SetupDVDDecrypter.exe

That's what I use when the internal routines fail. I don't really care much Vstrip, it doesn't handle multi-angle discs very well.

It is what I have found through experience. Every time I try to rip a multi-angle disc with V-strip, I end up with alot of problems. Most of the time it has to deal with synch issues. I generally only want one of the angles (sometimes the intro and outro to an anime episode will have two different angles, 1 with english credits and the other with japanese credits). I'm only after the first angle, which is usually the japanese credits. V-strip and the internal routines rip both angles, which what I think is causing the synch issues.

I have posted this reply so many times before also. But here its once again.

On the CONVERSION tab where you see movie length, click on the Drop Down to bring the Chapter Selection window. This window has the length of the movie at the top with a drop down arrow. If you click on this Drop down arrow, you can select the other angle and stuff. Once you select the other angle, you will notice the chapters for that angle are automatically shown. I neve use any other ripper except the internal ripper.

That dosen't work for all discs. I usually only have one movie length in the dropdown box and its the all episodes combined (everything is in one vob). The majority of the discs I'm backing up wont even list the different chapters in the drop down box. Using an external ripper is the only other option left open to me in those cases.

Well things are getting more interesting! The situation I have described so far is part of a larger issue. I have a set of 6 DVDs comntaining 13 tv episodes of 50 minutes each. Each DVD has 6 vob files and 2 ifo files. The ifo files are 14k and 86k in size. The larger VTS_01_0.IFO "points" to the DVD program contents. When this ifo file is selected by dvd2svcd depending one wich disc(of the 6) you are ripping you get the first episode (VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VOB, VTS_01_3.VOB) or if you rip another disc you get the second episode(VTS_01_4.VOB, VTS_01_5.VOB, VTS_01_6.VOB).That is to say you dont know what episode you will get! On 5 discs ripped the VTS_10_0.IFO "points" to the first 3 vob files in 3 cases and the last 3 vob files in the 2 other cases. this log encoding as I write is of a disc where the ifo file selected the last three vob files. On a disc where the ifo file "points" to the first three vob files it is impossible to rip the last three (as the preceeding part of this thread points out).

The chapter pull down only ever shows the chapters for 1 show, not the whole disc.

Have you tried an external ripper...?

carrotboat
22nd May 2003, 00:00
No I haven't tried an external ripper but it looks like I will have to. In my case should dvd2svcd show all the chapters to both shows in the drop down? Should the act of selecting a show be done by deselecting the chapters of the other show? If this is the case we have a bug!

carrotboat
23rd May 2003, 00:07
Well Onisama is correct. DVDDecrypter.exe works. it identifies the dvd content and allows each show ot be ripped. dvd2svcd fails to do this. We have a real bug here.

onisama
23rd May 2003, 03:28
I don't think it's neccessarily a bug, the internal routines and V-strip just have problems ripping some discs. At least that's my thoughts. What do you think mods is it a bug?

carrotboat

I'm sorry, but most likely a user bug.
I've ripped an awful lot of different TV programs and 90% of them have had selectable titles within one large group of vob files.
The remaining ones had one ifo/vob set per episode.

Please try your discs again, using internal routines as follows:
Under the Conversion tab, select "Movie Length", then the arrow next to "Track Length".
You will then see each 50 minute episode. Select the one you want.
Episodes are not always in sequential order as found in the DVD menu.
Also note that by default, DVD2SVCD will always select the longest length title or episode (as do most all rippers), which is why you can't predict which episode it's going to select automatically.

Here's some links for ripping episodes:
